Review “Thor: The Dark World” – Bring on the Thunder!!!

by Tim Barley

Cocktails and Movies might have found its new “action movie of the year.”

Three things that I thought about as I wandered out of the theater into the bright sunshine after seeing Thor: The Dark World:

  1. If I inhabited the world of Marvel movies, I would be afraid (very afraid) that gods, monsters and aliens have chosen the planet Earth for their stomping ground in old grudge matches. I could as WHY they chose Earth, but I can only assume it’s because the movie production facilities on other planets in the known universe pale in comparison to what we humans have achieved in 100 years or so of film.
  2. I am so glad that I was a comic book nerd for 20 years of my life and that I still have them so I can look at them again and see where this whole Marvel Universe is headed. (And if you  know your comic books and if you stick around for the first tag in the credits – there are two – you can put together what you see there and the one you saw in Avengers and figure it out… amazing!)
  3. Thor is a great, bad ass film!

Cocktails and Movies Review: “Pacific Rim” – A Big, Bold, Bombastic Good Time

Cocktails and Movies Is Ready to Jaeger-Bomb some Kaijus and Go To The Mat for Guillermo Del Toro!

Cocktails and Movies pacific rim main posterDeep in the Pacific Ocean, a rift of interdimensional proportions has been opened. We didn’t know how and we didn’t know why, but that rift would change the world we knew it. Out of the rift came the Kaiju (Japanese for “beast”), gigantic monsters aiming to wreak havoc on the world’s coastlines. Conventional weapons took too long to defeat the Kaiju, so in a desperate bid for our survival the Jaegers (German for “hunter”) were born. Piloted by intrepid jockeys like Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and under the watchful eye of Marshal Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), the Jaeger program just might save us all. That is, if humanity can learn its lesson and fight the Kaiju with half of the energy it uses to fight amongst itself.

Cocktails and Movies Review: “Man of Steel” – A Soaring Success

Cocktails and Movies Flies With The Man of Steel -And Comes Back To Earth Wanting More… With Just A Couple Tweaks.

Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) has always been a little different. He’s stronger than most people,Cocktails and Movies Man of Steel and faster for that matter. He’s even more attuned to what’s going on around him, and he uses these abilities to help people in need. What he’s about to learn is that he’s the last child of a dead world. A world whose avarice and rejection of logical thought had doomed their planet to destruction (metaphor much?). A world that his father (Russell Crowe) tried to save even in the face of a ruthless adversary (Michael Shannon), by sending him to a planet far, far away. Clark Kent may look like an ordinary man, but truth be told he’s something much more… super.

Cocktails and Movies Review: “Oz: The Great and Powerful” – Great AND Powerful

cocktails & movies oz great and powerfulThe problem with having a few cocktails before you enter a film is that sometimes you can identify with a character. It’s a really great thing that allows you to get inside a movie, but it can also suck you in too much. And when that movie is a look at the life of a con man’s, his big dreams and having to face up to his shortcomings, you can feel that your own life is a bit incomplete. Which is Cocktails and Movies way of saying that “Oz: The Great And Powerful” is a GREAT and POWERFUL film.
