Cocktails and Movies Weekend Wrap Up – July 12-14

BY TIM BARLEY AND MIKE REYES

Did we call the weekend correctly at Cocktails and Movies?

A very close weekend here at Cocktails and Movies, where the news isn’t as bad as other people have spun it. So pull up a stool, grab a bloody mary, and recap with us where YOU spent your hard earned money this weekend!

Overall, this weekend was a real close horse race. We went from Pacific Rim opening strong on Thursday night, to Grown Ups 2 taking the lead on Friday, to Despicable Me 2 ultimately taking the crown. It was a lot like a title fight in which the the title holder comes in and smacks around the two contenders. In fact, the differences between each of the top three shows just how close of a weekend it was.

Box Office Results 7/12 – 7/14 (courtesy of Box Office Mojo):

1. Despicable Me 2: Actual: $44.8 mil. / Prediction: $39 mil.

2. Grown Ups 2: Actual: $42.5 mil. / Prediction: $34 mil.

3. Pacific Rim: Actual: $38.3 mil. / Prediction: $42 mil.

4. The Heat: $14 mil.

5. The Lone Ranger: $11.1 mil.

6. Monsters University: $10.6 mil.

7. World War Z: $9.4 mil.

8. White House Down: $6.2 mil.

9. Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain: $5 mil.

10. Man of Steel: $4.8 mil.

A good news/bad news weekend

We’ll start with the bad news: Pacific Rim didn’t take first, or even second Place, even though it probably deserved it. The more favorable projections had the film taking first at around $50+ million, where as the least favorable were around the mid $30’s. Apparently, families hadn’t had enough of Gru and the Girls, and they decided to head over to “Lowest Common Denominator-ville” with Sandler and Company right after they did.

In fact, the Sandler sequel has opened slightly higher than the original film did back in 2010. The good news though is that when you take into account International receipts, Pacific Rim is almost halfway to the black and could recoup its budget. Like a lot of films these days, it looks like the International market will weigh in heavily on whether this is a success or not. It also doesn’t bode well for Legendary’s Godzilla picture with Warner Brothers next Summer, much less their new production deal with Universal. Still, it could be a lot worse.

In fact, The Lone Ranger will probably go down as the greatest flop of this Summer, because even if Pacific Rim doesn’t manage to pull out of a dive this weekend, it has at least made around $90 million with International receipts. The Lone Ranger‘s current total: $119 million, including International receipts. As for the rest of field, we’ve seen The Heat, Monsters University, World War Z, and Man of Steel continue to harvest their respective successes, where as films like The Lone Ranger and White House Down have continued to plummet in their failures. For as much as Sony will want to trumpet their success with Grown Ups 2, they’ll have a hard time selling it after the drubbing they’ve taken on White House Down.

So what’s ahead? Well we have Turbo opening this week, followed by R.I.P.D, The Conjuring, and Red 2*** this weekend. We’re looking at another week of possibly close competition, with no real clear winner in the offing. Which means we might just see another strong weekend from some of, if not all three of this week’s top three. Either way, we’ll have the analysis, commentary, and shenannigans that you keep coming back for here at Cocktails and Movies. Monday’s up and going, time to go to work.
