Cocktails and Movies Holiday Cocktail #13: Hot Buttered Rum

by Mike Reyes

Another prime cocktail choice for the literate inebriates out there.

The other day, while I was in the checkout line over at my local Target, I found a cocktail manual (simply entitled Cocktail Recipes) published by Pilsbury’s cook book division. I figured I’d give it a buy and see what sorts of tips and tactics it had within its very covers. While it’s no Schiller’s Liquor Bar collection, it’s a handy introductory guide into the world of mixing, particularly if you’re starting out as a party host. A couple concoctions stood out in my mind, and one of them was an old stand-by that always helps keep the cheeks rosy during those cold winter months. Prepare to kick Jack Frost in the icicles as we mix up a batch of the warm, the lovely…

Hot Buttered Rum

2 oz. rum (preferably something dark, like say The Kraken Black Spiced Rum)
1 tsp packed brown sugar
3/4 – 1 cup boiling water or hot milk
2 tsp butter
Ground nutmeg

Combine rum and sugar in warm Irish coffee glass or mug. Stir in boiling water or hot milk. Float Butter on top and sprinkle with Nutmeg.

Day 13 of our 30 Holi-Days of Cocktails and Movies, and we’ve only begun to scale the peaks of the recipes we have on hand. Keep an eye out for more delicious Holiday drink suggestions, as well as our 12 Drinks of Christmas in the near future as President Tim returns to the cocktail selections prior to taking Cocktails and Movies on the road for the last half of December to his home state of Michigan. You can bet he’s going the heated cocktail route!

Happy Saturday, Mixers! Remember, don’t watch bad movies unless you have a good cocktail and DON’T DRINK & DRIVE!
