Out Of Vacation Time? Take Some Trailer Time With Us!

We’re almost half way through summer, Mixers. This means that we’re almost out of good movies to watch, and we’re almost headed into dump season. For now, there’s still some big movers and shakers waiting to have their moment in the sun, and some of them have caught our eye this week with trailers that look pretty damned good. So open your special drawer, fetch the secret stash of booze you’ve got hidden away, and come see what’s in store for us in the coming months!

The Purge: Anarchy (Trailer 2)Purge Anarchy Thumbnail

Studio: Universal

Release Date: July 18, 2014

Concept: Once a year, for one night only, the citizens of America are allowed to commit any crime imaginable – including murder. If this movies does well enough, Universal will keep letting them do so.

Presentation/Spoilers: Who would have thought it’d be possible to see a Purge trailer without the creepy usage of America The Beautiful. Strangely enough, it’s kind of missed in this trailer, as it’s become a trademark of the series. Not a lot of spoilers here, just lean and mean action.

Anticipation Factor: Moderate. The first one was a massive let down, but the open world setting does have promise.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (Final Trailer) Dawn of Apes Thumbnail

Studio: 20th Century Fox

Release Date: July 11, 2014

Concept: Ten years after Rise of the Planet of the Apes, humanity is on its knees due to a viral apocalypse that’s ravaged the planet. While we struggle, the Apes are getting smarter but do not wish to be bothered by the world of humans. Needless to say, this doesn’t really work out.

Presentation/Spoilers: Between a strong viral marketing campaign detailing the fall of humanity, and the prime cut trailers that have been shown, Fox has upped their game consistently. However, this version of the final trailer reveals a little more than it should.

Anticipation Factor: Very High. This could be the movie that’ll tip the Apes franchise back into blockbuster territory.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Trailer #2) TMNT Thumbnail

Studio: Paramount

Release Date: August 8, 2014

Concept: Four turtles, mutated by a chemical ooze, become vigilante crime fighters. Taught by their mentor, Master Shredder, they become proficient in the ways of the martial arts. Hunted by their nemesis, Shredder, they will soon find that it’s not easy being lean green justice machines.

Presentation/Spoilers: This trailer has dropped a lot of show and tell points that have been alluded to in previous trailers. We see more of Splinter and Shredder, as well as the turtles themselves. Unfortunately, while the trailer syncs the action and the soundtrack pretty well in the second half, it fails to do so once the dubstep kicks in. Also, Whoopi Goldberg, what are you doing here?!

Anticipation Factor: Low. The kids can have it, but these turtles don’t hold any of our interest anymore.

Deliver Us ThumbnailDeliver Us From Evil

Studio: Sony/Screen Gems

Release Date: July 2, 2014

Concept: “Inspired by actual accounts of NYPD sergeant Ralph Sarchie”, Deliver Us From Evil is about an NYPD cop hunting down a case of true evil. The only problem is, that evil is hunting him right back.

Presentation/Spoilers: This teaser is simple, straight forward, and tries to be atmospheric. However, delaying the scares only works when you don’t continually fake the audience out. It looks like this film takes what The Conjuring did to effectively milk its scares, and drags it out like a Family Guy punchline.

Anticipation Factor: Low. Sony seems to eat up this “based on true events” crap that passes for Horror these days, and if this is anything like Scott Derrickson’s last film, Sinister, you’ve seen all of the scary parts in the trailer… and they won’t be scary in the film. This is why Sony is contemplating canning their film division.

Hector And The Search For HappinessHector Thumbnail

Studio: Koch Media

Release Date: September 19, 2014

Concept: Hector, a young psychiatrist with a beautiful girlfriend and a satisfactory life, decides that he is to go on a quest to understand happiness. This quest will take him all over the world, while at the same time possibly ruining his relationship and his life at home.

Presentation/Spoilers: A quick one, with all of the laughs and highlights the story wants you to know about going in.

Anticipation Factor: Moderate. It looks cute, and Simon Pegg is always aces, but there’s no denying the critics who feel like this is a slightly more British version of The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty.
