Dark Crimes

Studio: Saban Films
Release Date: May 11, 2018
Synopsis:
A murder investigation of a slain business man turns to clues found in an author’s book about an eerily similar crime. Based on the 2008 article “True Crimes – A postmodern murder mystery” by David Grann.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This movie looks interesting, it reminds me slightly of 8MM. I love it when actors take a role so different than what they are known for. Jim Carrey has been on a slight mediocre streak of late. He does have good acting ability, which we have seen in the Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine. So it will be good to see take that to another level in this one. This will have a lot of twist and turns, and it should be an interesting ride.

Hearts Beat Loud

Studio: Gunpowder & Sky
Release Date: June 8, 2018
Synopsis:
A father and daughter form an unlikely songwriting duo in the summer before she leaves for college.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This is the next great feel good movie. I love the chemistry between Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons. They both look good when they are separate but really shine when they are together. This has a lot of emotion, drama, and humor in it. And I love any movie that has to do with bands and the process of making music. And then you add the family dimension to it and you got yourself a winner.

Hereditary

Studio: A24
Release Date: June 8, 2018
Synopsis:
When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited as it slowly destroys everything they know.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This has a whole lot of suspense and creepiness to it. I have heard nothing but great things about it and the trailers thus far prove it. Toni Collette is a good choice as the mother, she definitely is pulling out everything out of her acting repertoire for this one. Her kids, Milly Shapiro and Alex Wolff, are pretty good in here as well. It will be interesting to see what is actually behind all the craziness that they are experiencing.

Hot Summer Nights

Studio: A24
Release Date: July 27, 2018
Synopsis:
A boy comes of age during a summer he spends in Cape Cod.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This reminds me slightly of a teenage version of Blow. They have a great lead in Timothee Chalamet, who has been impressive in the roles he has been doing the last few years. It will be interesting to see how big they get, the troubles that it brings, and how they get out of it.

Hotel Artemis

Studio: Global Road Entertainment
Release Date: TBD
Synopsis:
Set in riot-torn, near-future Los Angeles, ‘Hotel Artemis’ follows the Nurse, who runs a secret, members-only emergency room for criminals.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I like it! It has a bit of the John Wick world set in a Blade Runner time period. This ensemble cast looks good, led by the amazing Jodie Foster. This looks like it is going to be a whole lot of fun. it is going to have some dark comedy to it with a lot of action and some good one-liners. I can not wait to see what the next trailer brings.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Studio: Universal
Release Date: June 22, 2018
Synopsis:
When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I liked a lot of what they did recharging the Jurassic series with Jurassic World. They had a good storyline, new and interesting characters, the dinosaur SFX were top-notch, and had lots of action and spine-tingling moments. This sequel looks just as good as the first one. I am loving the new bad dinosaur they engineered. Plus, you got some good villains, the greedy corporate types, that we hope get eaten up.

Ocean’s 8

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: June 8, 2018
Synopsis:
Debbie Ocean gathers a crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City’s yearly Met Gala.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I have mixed feelings about this. I am big fans of Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett but they are pale versions and lack the chemistry that Clooney and Pitt had. I like most of their crew, but this movie is really lacking any kind of villain. Also, what is up with Anne Hathaway, it looks like she is in on the caper but in the previous trailer it looks like she was the victim. That is definitely spoiling it for the audience.

The Incredibles 2

Studio: Buena Vista
Release Date: June 15, 2018
Synopsis:
Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) is left to care for Jack-Jack while Helen (Elastigirl) is out saving the world.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I have been waiting quiet awhile for this sequel as have many fans. Pixar made a lot of sequels but I do not know why this one took so long. This looks just as good as the first one. The family dynamics is still there and I am loving how they have thrown Jack Jack into the mix. The first had Bob as the main hero, so it’s good to see that Helen gets her moment to shine in this. Let us hope we get a slight peek of the villain in the next trailer.

The Wife

Studio: Sony Pictures Classics
Release Date: August 3, 2018
Synopsis:
A wife questions her life choices as she travels to Stockholm with her husband, where he is slated to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I love a movie that involves a person who looks back on their life and the choices they have made. Glenn Close looks great in this, she’s been doing consistently good work the last number of years, but this is probably her best of late. This is definitely going to have a lot of emotion and drama to it. I can not wait to see if and how she blows up on her husband.
