Blindspotting

Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date: July 27, 2018
Synopsis:
Lifelong friends Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal co-wrote and star in this timely and wildly entertaining story about the intersection of race and class, set against the backdrop of a rapidly gentrifying Oakland.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is the kind of small movie that I enjoy watching that the majority of movie-goers will miss out on. This has a good storyline that has hits on a subject matter that seems rather rampant in society lately. The “friend” is a friend that some of us can relate to, which is something that I find is going to be a lot of fun but also bring lots of grief. This should be a lot of fun.

Crazy Rich Asians

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: August 17, 2018
Synopsis:
Three wealthy Chinese families prepare for the wedding of the year.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. A good friend of mine just came back from Hong Kong & Singapore and was talking about the opulence of the stores, cities, and the people. So seeing this trailer made me enjoy just a bit more. This is going to have a lot of funny moments, but also I love the loving and doting mother played by Michelle Yeoh, who does not like the girlfriend. This should have a whole lot of craziness to it.

Deadpool 2

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: May 18, 2018
Synopsis:
Wisecracking mercenary Deadpool battles the evil and powerful Cable and other bad guys to save a boy’s life.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. The trailers for this have been great with this last one being the best of the bunch. The first few trailers focused more on Deadpool and Cable. Everything that made the first one great is here in spades .. adult humor/situations and breaking the 4th wall. I loved that they showed more about the story, particularly a short intro to …. X-Force! Domino was great, her sequence was frickin’ cool. But, it is Peter that made chuckle the most. This is going to be @#$% awesome!

Life Of The Party

Studio: Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema
Release Date: May 11, 2018
Synopsis:
When her husband suddenly dumps her, longtime dedicated housewife Deanna turns regret into re-set by going back to college – landing in the same class and school as her daughter, who’s not entirely sold on the idea. Plunging headlong into the campus experience, the increasingly outspoken Deanna — now Dee Rock — embraces freedom, fun, and frat boys on her own terms, finding her true self in a senior year no one ever expected.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I am a fan of Melissa McCarthy, she does have a few duds but the majority of her work is pretty funny. This looks like it will be the later. This reminds me slightly of a mix between Back to School and the House Bunny with a little divorce banter thrown in. I am not digging the sub-plot involving the daughter and her friends so much. But, it is the hostility between her and her ex-husband, and the antics with her best friend that I really enjoy. I hope this is not a movie that is 1/2 good and 1/2 bad.

Puzzle

Studio: Sony Pictures Classic
Release Date: July 13, 2018
Synopsis:
Agnes, taken for granted as a suburban mother, discovers a passion for solving jigsaw puzzles which unexpectedly draws her into a new world – where her life unfolds in ways she could never have imagined.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I love how this trailer begins with the humdrum live of a wife/mother. How her life has not gone the way she likes and is unappreciated by her family. This movie is going to have a lot of drama and emotion to it. I like this kind of storyline where an individuals regains a passion for life when she takes a chance at doing something out of their normal routine. Kelly MacDonald and Irrfan Kahn do a good job and have good chemistry together. That is what is great about smaller movies, it gives actors that are more known for supporting roles get their moment to shine as lead actors.

The Equalizer 2

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date: July 20, 2018
Synopsis:
Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. I was a big fan of the first Equalizer as well as a fan of Denzel Washington since Glory. This is one of those rare times when the sequel might actually be better than the original. I think the revenge angle is what takes it to another level here. This has a lot of what made the original good as well sequences that are definite nods from the first. This is going to be a whole lot of fun!

Venom

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date: October 5, 2018
Synopsis:
This plot is unknown.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is a lot better than the teaser trailer they did last month. They should have just waited to release this one. They would not have alienated so many Venom fans that way. This trailer not only gives us a good look at Venom’s abilities but also what the storyline might be about. I am not a fan of the big tweaks they made to the character, new city, and the symbiotes’ origins. But, they have a lot of cool action/fight sequences. The voice of Venom is scary good. What really impress me is the villain(s), so let’s hope we get a little look at them in the next trailer.

Woman Walks Ahead

Studio: A24
Release Date:
June 29, 2018
Synopsis: Catherine Weldon, a portrait painter from 1890s Brooklyn, travels to Dakota to paint a portrait of Sitting Bull and becomes embroiled in the Lakota peoples’ struggle over the rights to their land.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I have been enjoying the number of westerns that have been coming out of late. I love the actors Jessica Chastain & Sam Rockwell, and I think Michael Greyeyes holds us own against her. I think the storyline is something that gets to me a little more because of my Native American heritage. But, I think it will be dramatic and emotionally sad. The cinematography is beautiful as well, which is another reason why I like westerns. I hope we get to see a little more action in the next trailer.
