American Assassin     AmericanAssassin

Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date:
September 15, 2017
Synopsis:
A story centered on counter-terrorism agent Mitch Rapp.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This looks great! I have been eagerly awaiting this since I first heard they were making it into a movie. They have a perfect choice of Dylan O’Brien as Mitch Rapp. He looks great, his demeanor is perfect, and it looks like all his training for the movie paid off. Michael Keaton is so bad ass as his instructor. It looks like we have a new and worthy contender to replace the Jason Bourne franchise!

Drone     Drone

Studio: Look To The Sky Films
Release Date:
May 26, 2017
Synopsis:
Ideologies collide with fatal results when a military drone contractor meets an enigmatic Pakistani businessman.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I have seen some good movies and documentaries about “drones” over the last few years. But, this appears like it might be the best of those. Not only do we get to see the results of a drone mission but the impact it has on the victims and the ramifications it can produce. This looks like it’s going to be a tense and emotional movie.

Maudie     Maudie

Studio: Sony Classics
Release Date:
June 16, 2017
Synopsis:
An arthritic Nova Scotia woman works as a housekeeper while she hones her skills as an artist and eventually becomes a beloved figure in the community.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I love bio-pics and this looks like it is going to be a good one. Sally Hawkins delivers a great performance, especially with the portrayal of her ailment. Ethan Hawke continues his streak and provides another solid performance. The storyline has a lot of charm, emotion, and drama to it. The cinematography is beautiful, it almost has a painting-like quality to it.

Paris Can Wait     ParisCanWait

Studio: Sony Classics
Release Date:
May 12, 2017
Synopsis:
Anne is at a crossroads in her life. Long married to a successful, driven but inattentive movie producer, she unexpectedly finds herself taking a car trip from Cannes to Paris with a business associate of her husband. What should be a seven-hour drive turns into a carefree two-day adventure replete with diversions involving picturesque sights, fine food and wine, humor, wisdom and romance, reawakening Anne’s senses and giving her a new lust for life.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is that kind of movie which reminds us to take a moment to smell the roses and enjoy life. I love Diane Lane and watch everything she does, and this looks like it will be one of her performances of the past few years. Her road trip companion, Arnaud Viard, is not only hilarious but has great charisma. The cinematography is beautiful, so that is something I am looking forward to when they are on their way to Paris.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi     StarWarsTheLastJedi

Studio: Buena Vista
Release Date:
December 15, 2017
Synopsis:
Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga.

Anticipation Factor: VERY HIGH. I am a huge Star Wars fan, so I may be a bit biased in my assessment. But, this first look at Episode VIII was soooo good that I watched it a number of times once it debuted on the web. I loved The Force Awakens, but this looks even better than that. We got a lot of great shots of all the characters to the new trilogy but the best parts are of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker! We also get a lot of cool shots of new vehicles, new planets, and space battles. The way it ends though with Luke telling everyone it’s time for the Jedi to end gave me chills. It is 237 long days we have to wait!

The Bad Batch     TheBadBatch

Studio: Neon
Release Date:
June 23, 2017
Synopsis:
A dystopian love story in a Texas wasteland and set in a community of cannibals.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. This is definitely a better trailer than the first trailer which was an incoherent mess. I love a good apocalyptic story but I do not think I have ever seen one with a love story angle to it. I am not too sure whether or not Suki Waterhouse can pull off being the lead actress, but she does have some good supporting cast to work off of. I am hoping the next trailer can focus a bit on the cannibals but maybe they are saving how she lost the leg and arm for the movie.

The Beguiled     TheBeguiled

Studio: Focus Features
Release Date:
June 23, 2017
Synopsis:
At a girls’ school in Virginia during the Civil War, where the young women have been sheltered from the outside world, a wounded Union soldier is taken in. Soon, the house is taken over with sexual tension, rivalries, and an unexpected turn of events.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is definitely a better look at what we can expect from this movie. This one shows Colin Farrell in a more lecherous role. We get to see a little more of what the girls do to win his affection. The cinematography looks great, especially the camera work inside the home. The costumes for this period piece is also spot on, which further enhances the story. It will be interesting to see if they are faithful to the ending of the original or if they do a re-imagining.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard   TheHitmansBodyguard(Red-band)

Studio: Lionsgate / Summit
Release Date:
August 18, 2017
Synopsis:
The world’s top bodyguard gets a new client, a hit man who must testify at the International Court of Justice. They must put their differences aside and work together to make it to the trial on time.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I love the play on the movie The Bodyguard they did for the poster and the use of the theme song for it in the trailer. Lmao. The pairing of Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds is pure gold. It almost reminds me of the chemistry of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in the original Lethal Weapon. The action sequences in this one are way over the top, as is the foul language. I am so waiting for this one.

The Little Hours   (Red-band)  TheLittleHours

Studio: Gunpowder & Sky
Release Date:
June 30, 2017
Synopsis:
A young servant fleeing from his master takes refuge at a convent full of emotionally unstable nuns in the middle ages.

Anticipation Factor: LOW. Once I saw who was in it, and then the humble and church theme to it, I knew they would do a 180 degree turn. I’m not too sure about the comedy, as it appears to be over the top and forced. I think the only person I actually found funny was Fred Armisen, and maybe Nick Offerman. The tone of the movie is not something I would expect considering the comedic talent that is in it.

The Man With The Iron Heart     TheManWithTheIronHeart

Studio: Cutting Edge Group
Release Date:
TBA
Synopsis:
1942: The Third Reich is at its peak. The Czech resistance in London decides to plan the most ambitious military operation of WWII: Anthropoid. Two young recruits in their late twenties, Jozef Gabcik and Jan Kubis, are sent to Prague to assassinate the most ruthless Nazi leader – Reich-protector Reinhard Heydrich, Head of the SS, the Gestapo, and the architect of the “Final Solution”.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. The last few years there have been a plethora of movies about Nazis. As well as another film, Anthropoid, of the same storyline. That movie was good but this one actually might be better. I think it might be because we get to learn more about Heydrich before the assassination operation takes place. You get to see a lot of his ruthlessness and why he was so despised. I like the casting of Jason Clarke as Heydrich, Rosamund Pike as his wife, and I’m a big fan of Jack O’Connell since I first saw him in Starred Up. Let’s hope they get a U.S. release date soon.

For our Mixers with a more eclectic film palette, here’s a smaller movie you might miss out on.  This is something we here at CocktailsandMovies.com we like to call … an extra sip!

Harold and Lillian: A Hollywood Love Story     HaroldAndLillian

Studio: Adama Films
Release Date:
April 28, 2017
Synopsis:
Harold and Lillian eloped to Hollywood in 1947, where they became the film industry’s secret weapons. Nobody talked about them, but everybody wanted them. Theirs is the greatest story never told-until now.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I love documentaries, especially ones where I get the behind the story look at things that take place in the movie world. It is good to get a good look at the little people the are so instrumental in creating a movie. And I love the fact that they got their own love story to tell. I’m not a big love story fan, but the fact that this is real and not a Hollywood version is what makes it even cuter and more appealing to me.
