Adrift

Studio: STX Entertainment
Release Date: June 1, 2018
Synopsis:
Based on the true story of survival, a young couple’s chance encounter leads them first to love, and then on the adventure of a lifetime as they face one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I really liked this final trailer. From the first teaser to this last one, the movie has gotten better and better. This focused more on Shailene Woodley and what she has to go through when her boyfriend Sam Claflin is crippled during a hurricane. I love not only a movie based on a true story but also a movie that deals with surviving against nature and overwhelming odds.Being lost at sea also adds a sense of doom and isolation that enhances the suspense. This should be a good movie.

American Animals

Studio: The Orchard
Release Date: June 1, 2018
Synopsis:
Four young men mistake their lives for a movie and attempt one of the most audacious heists in U.S. history.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I though the first teaser trailer was interesting but I like this first full trailer. I love how they show the guys hum-drum lives. Then how they go about coming up with the idea and planning the theft. They show a little about them starting the actual job but don’t give away too much of that. I am sure things will go unexpectedly wrong since none of them are criminals and do not know what to do. This is going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Distorted

Studio: QME Entertainment
Release Date: TBD
Synopsis:
A 32-year-old woman suffering from bipolar disorder comes to suspect the proprietor of the state-of-the-art ”smart apartment” she and her husband just moved into is using the building’s residents as unwitting guinea pigs for a ”synthetic telepathy” brainwashing plot with dire global ramifications.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. This has got a borderline B-movie feel to it. It has an interesting premise with the experimentation angle or is it just all her in mind. This is what could make or break the movie and give it a nice twist. The acting has it’s ups and downs, but I am a big John Cusack fan and see about everything he does. I just hope the next trailer is a little better.

Hotel Transylvania 3

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date: July 13, 2018
Synopsis:
Mavis surprises Dracula with a family voyage on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship so he can take a vacation from providing everyone else’s vacation at the hotel. The rest of Drac’s Pack cannot resist going along. But once they leave port, romance arises when Dracula meets the mysterious ship Captain, Ericka. Now it’s Mavis’ turn to play the overprotective parent, keeping her dad and Ericka apart. Little do they know that his “too good to be true” love interest is actually a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing, ancient nemesis to Dracula and all other monsters.

Anticipation Factor: LOW. I still can not believe this is the third movie in the series. This most be highly profitable for the studios because I can not see how they could ever get green-lit. The first one was ok, and the second one looked horrible, and this one might be better than the last. I felt like I was watching an extended scene of their airplane flight. Which I did find too many scenes that funny. Let’s hope that Dracula’s love interest takes out all the creatures of the night out at the end.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again

Studio: Universal
Release Date: July 20, 2018
Synopsis:
In this sequel to Mamma Mia! Sophie learns about her mother’s past while pregnant.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. Normally I am not a fan of musicals but I enjoyed the first one more than I should have. It is good to see all the cast back for the sequel, with Lily James joining the cast as Meryl Streep‘s younger self. I love how they go to the past to see how it all began. Even though the music seems like it’s all rehashed, I still get a tad bit excited for the song and dance. This looks like it may be as fan as the original.

Never Goin’ Back

Studio: A24
Release Date: August 3, 2018
Synopsis:
Jessie and Angela, high school dropouts, are taking a week off to chill at the beach. Too bad their house got robbed, rent’s due, they’re about to get fired, and they’re broke.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This is what I love about watching small independent movies. Every once in a while a little gem like this will appear. I have seen great slacker movies with guys, but never a great one with girls. That is until now. These two young ladies have great chemistry together and they give good performances. They had a lot of good scenes that were cute and funny. I am stoked to see what the next trailer gives us.

Robin Hood

Studio: Lionsgate / Summit
Release Date: November 21, 2018
Synopsis:
A war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This movie definitely gets that bad image of Robin Hood that Russell Crowe did out of my mind. It does re-invent the Robin Hood legend a bit but does it in a way that makes it entertaining. I am loving the cast of Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, and Ben Mendelsohn. Mendelsohn always plays great bad guys, I liken him to how the late great Alan Rickman did the Sheriff of Nottingham. There were a lot of great action sequences that showcase Robin’s abilities. This might be my favorite take of Robin Hood ever.

Superfly

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date: June 15, 2018
Synopsis:
The movie is a remake of the 1972 blaxploitation film ‘Super Fly’.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I am not a fan of movie remakes as they have a horrible track record. But, this might be one of those rare few that could be good movies. I love the updated feel to it and the relocation to Atlanta. The characters are not one-dimensional and stereotyped as in the original. They are smart, sharp, and have the know how to survive in their world. Then you up the danger by making the Mexican drug cartels the bad guys. Damn! This trailer from start to finish looks great. I can not wait to see how it all plays out.

The Catcher Was A Spy

Studio: IFC Films
Release Date: TBD
Synopsis:
A major league baseball player, Moe Berg, lives a double life working for the Office of Strategic Services.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. I was not expecting that. This movie looks great and it is based on a true story (one of my faves). I love it when an actor takes on a different roles than what they are known for. I am a fan of Paul Rudd and even more so now. He is great at playing the everyday man, and that enhances the story and emotion of his character. He also has one hell of an All-Star ensemble cast to play off of. This movie looks beautiful and the story really gets it’s hooks into you from the beginning. This may have award nomination potential. I can not wait to see this.
