A.X.L.

Studio: Global Road Entertainment
Release Date: August 24, 2018
Synopsis:
The life of a teenage boy is forever altered by a chance encounter with cutting edge military technology.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. This is the classic boy meets alien/monster/robot while being pursued by law enforcement/government/creators storyline that we have seen before. There is not much of a twist or change to what we have seen before in other movies. But, the SFX and animatronics for AXL look good. This looks like it could be a good kids movie. They just need to punch it up a little bit in their next trailer.

Beautiful Boy

Studio: Amazon Studios
Release Date: October 12, 2018
Synopsis:
Based on the memoir “Beautiful Boy” by David Sheff and “Tweak” by his son, Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I am not a big fan of most teaser trailers. But, this does show that this movie is going to be quite an emotional and dramatic coming of age story. I think that Timothee Chalamet is an extraordinary talented actor and he looks great in what little we have seen. Steve Carrell has really become an excellent dramatic actor in the last few years, so he should make a good character to pair with. I can not wait to see a full trailer for this one.

Bleeding Steel

Studio: Lionsgate Premiere
Release Date: July 8, 2018
Synopsis:
A special force agent is assigned to protect a scientist and his creation from a sinister gang.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. Actually I have already seen this movie and it is pretty decent. You can see that the years are starting to get to Jackie Chan. But, it is good that he has started working with more of a group and not taking on the bad guys by himself. The action sequences & fight sequences are not his best work but still quite enjoyable. The only thing I really did not enjoy was the villains and a few cartoonish moments.

Burning

Studio: Pine House Films
Release Date: TBD
Synopsis:
Jong-soo, a part-time worker, bumps into Hae-mi while delivering, who used to live in the same neighborhood. Hae-mi asks him to look after her cat while she’s on a trip to Africa. When Hae-mi comes back, she introduces Ben, a mysterious guy she met in Africa, to Jong-soo. One day, Ben visits Jong-soo’s with Hae-mi and confesses his own secret hobby.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I liked the first teaser trailer and this one showed us a little more. It is a little weird to see Glenn from The Walking Dead speak Korean, but he’s got a mysterious edge to him. I am a fan of Korean movies, there is a lot of great movies that most people miss out on. And it will be interesting to what direction this goes and how it ends.

City Of Lies

Studio: Global Road Entertainment
Release Date:
September 7, 2018
Synopsis:
The murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG spark an investigation.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. It has been over 20 years and both murders have not been solved. I have enjoyed the movies that have come out about both rappers. So it will be interesting to see how the investigations go. Based on the trailer, it looks like dirty cops will feature heavy into the movie. Johnny Depp has been hit and miss the last couple years, but he looks good. Even more so, when he’s got Forest Whitaker to work against. It will be interesting to see what the next trailer will show us.

Damsel

Studio: Magnolia Pictures
Release Date:
June 22, 2018
Synopsis:
It’s the Wild West, circa 1870. Samuel Alabaster, an affluent pioneer, ventures across the American frontier to marry the love of his life, Penelope. As his group traverses the west, the once-simple journey grows treacherous, blurring the lines between hero, villain and damsel.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. I am not sure what to make of this. I am a big fan of Westerns, especially most of the ones that have come out the last few years. This one has a real kooky spin on it, and not in a good way. Robert Pattinson has done a lot to get that Edward from Twilight stink of him with some good movie roles he has taken since. But, he is not looking good in this role. Mia Wasikowska is a great young actress and she looks good in this role, something a little different than norm. I am hoping the next trailer is better.

Hotel Artemis

Studio: Global Road Entertainment
Release Date:
June 8, 2018
Synopsis:
Set in riot-torn, near-future Los Angeles, ‘Hotel Artemis’ follows the Nurse, who runs a secret, members-only emergency room for criminals.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I liked the first trailer and liked this one even more. We get a better look at all the hotel guests and more of the storyline. This has a great ensemble cast with Jodie Foster as the main piece connecting to everyone. You can not have a good movie without a good bad guy, and they have that in the always great Jeff Goldblum. There is a lot of action and humor to make this one hell of a summer movie!

Mowgli

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date:
October 19, 2018
Synopsis:
A human child raised by wolves must face off against a menacing tiger named Shere Khan, as well as his own origins.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I enjoyed the animated The Jungle Book when I was a kid and I loved the live-action version that came out the year before. But this movie looks even better than that one. I think making it a bit darker gives it a different feel to it. The CGI and SFX look amazing. This movie definitely has a beautiful look to it, kudos to first time director Andy Serkis on creating this extraordinary film. I can not wait to see this!

Papillon

Studio: Bleecker Street
Release Date:
August 24, 2018
Synopsis:
A prisoner detained on a remote island plots his escape. A remake of the 1973 film ‘Papillon’.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. When I heard they were doing a remake of Papillon, I had very mixed reactions to the first trailer. I liked that they expanded on the time before imprisonment, but it will be very hard to top Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman‘s performances. I like Charlie Hunnam, but his roles since leaving Sons of Anarchy (a fave of mine) have been as stellar as we hoped. Rami Malek is a good actor I hear, but I have not seen him in anything yet, at least a role of substance. I hope the next trailer helps alleviate some of those concerns.

Shock and Awe

Studio: Castle Rock Entertainment
Release Date: July 13, 2018
Synopsis:
A group of journalists covering George Bush’s planned invasion of Iraq in 2003 are skeptical of the presidents claim that Saddam Hussein has “weapons of mass destruction.”

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This looks great. I have been a big fan of investigative type of movies, whether it be journalism, police, etc.. There is something that is exciting as you see the pieces come together. I am a big fan of Woody Harrelson since his first days at Cheers. James Marsden looks good as his partner, and Tommy Lee Jones has a great supporting role. This movie has a great amount of drama and emotion, but also a good amount of humor added to the mix. Even though we know the end result of the investigation, it is always good to see things we were not privy to at the time it was going on. That is what will help make this a good movie.

Skyscraper

Studio: Universal
Release Date:
July 13, 2018
Synopsis:
FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran Will Sawyer, who now assesses security for skyscrapers. On assignment in Hong Kong he finds the tallest, safest building in the world suddenly ablaze, and he’s been framed for it. A wanted man on the run, Will must find those responsible, clear his name and somehow rescue his family who is trapped inside the building…above the fire line.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This latest trailer just upgraded the movie from popcorn movie to legit big action summer movie hit. This movie has a nice combination of Die Hard and White House Down with a family twist. This movie was focused more of Dwayne Johnson, his family, and the coolness of the building. I am loving the action sequences and the dangers they have to face. I still think that the villains are going to be the wild card, a movie like this is only as good as the bad guys. And from what I see they are lacking in it. Regardless, this is going to be one fun movie to watch.

Sorry To Bother You   (Red-band)

Studio: Annapurna Pictures
Release Date: July 6, 2018
Synopsis:
In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a macabre universe.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This movie has a great message about race, society, and corporate greed. Even with that theme, there is quite a lot of humor in this movie. I am loving this cast, led by Lakeith Stanfield. I have mixed feelings about the “white” voice, it is funny but a bit demeaning as well. It will be interesting to see where the movies and how it comes together. This small movie could possibly be a big hit with the youth.

The Happy Time Murders   (Red-band)

Studio: STX Entertainment
Release Date: August 17, 2018
Synopsis: W
hen the puppet cast of an ’80s children’s TV show begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet takes on the case.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. It has been quite awhile since I have laughed that hard at a movie trailer. This is the R-Rated version of a Sesame Street/The Muppets movie that we deserve. This was so wrong on a lot of levels, but it was just so damn funny. It is funny when you see things so lovable that we remember fondly as kids doing adult things and using foul language. This is definitely not a children’s movie.

Wildfire

Studio: IFC Films
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
A boy witnesses his parents’ marriage falling apart after his mother finds another man.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This is an impressive looking debut film by Paul Dano. The film looks amazing, it has a good storyline with lots of emotion/drama, and the acting by Carey Mulligan is fantastic. She is a great actress and she takes it to another level in this movie. Jake Gyllenhaal and Ed Oxenbould looks pretty good as her husband and son. But, it is the young man that could make or break this movie. Hopefully they focus more on his acting in the next trailer.
