Cocktailsandmovies.com Thursday Trailer Tap

Are you sitting in your cubicle with stacks of TPS reports to go through? Listening to that conference call where everyone is talking at the same time about nothing at all that matters? Stuck at the water cooler hearing about how Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol.2 destroyed the competition to be #1. Need something to watch with that flask in your desk and that burned microwave popcorn from the break room? Let us share something new with you.

This is a great week for movie trailers, not because there were a lot of trailers but because we got some great ones this week. Although technically not a Summer Movie, the start unofficially has been moving to the beginning of May and not the end. This week we have FIVE movie we are seeing a movie trailer for the first time and SIX movies we have previewed for you already in the past. This week we have movies about our favorite lifeguards, the only bank to be prosecuted from the housing mortgage scandal, a sequel to a sci-fi classic, a historic WWII event, crazy girls’ weekend, a technological end of the world scenario, a bachelorette party goes astray, a real-life’s couple love story, a British serial killer thriller, the first female superhero movie, and a woman’s reality is changed after taking drugs!

While El Jefe mixes himself another afternoon cocktail, let’s step up to the bar before he comes back.  So open your special drawer, fetch that secret stash of booze you’ve got hidden away and come see what will be in store for us moviegoers in the coming months!

I have ELEVEN new trailers for you to sample from our Thursday Trailer Tap!

Baywatch     BaywatchB

Studio: Paramount
Release Date:
May 25, 2017
Synopsis:
Devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchanan butts heads with a brash new recruit. Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. The final trailer is almost as good as the first trailer that debuted. They cut back a lot on the comedy, upped the action, the foul language, and the lifeguard razzing. Dwayne Johnson has another hit and possible franchise on his hands, and Zac Efron is killing it with R-rated comedies of late. I was really into the choices of the ladies the first time I saw them, but they have been growing on me. I think they take the #1 spot on Memorial Day weekend.

Blade Runner 2049     BladeRunner2049A

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date:
October 6, 2017
Synopsis:
Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard, a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Anticipation Factor: VERY HIGH. I am huge fan of the original Blade Runner, and I’ve seen all multiple versions of it. This sequel looks amazing, visually it is stunning and in line with the look of the original. The score is spot on as well, which helps to enhance the story. I am loving the fact that even though it’s a sequel, Harrison Ford‘s Deckard is a supporting character, and Ryan Gosling‘s K is the main character. Even though Ridley Scott is not the director, this sequel is in great hands in the amazing director Denis Villeneuve. I have been a fan of his since Incendies and an even bigger one after Sicario and Arrival, so I can’t wait to see how amazing his movie will be.

Dunkirk     DunkirkA

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date:
July 21, 2017
Synopsis:
Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada, and France are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.

Anticipation Factor: VERY HIGH. I have been a fan of Christopher Nolan since I first saw Memento in the theatres. I have become a bigger fan with every movie since than. He is such a phenomenal director who creates such amazing movies, and Dunkirk looks it might be his best one yet. He has crafted a beautiful looking movie that deals with an important event of WWII. It looks like it was actually filmed during that time, as the costumes, sets, vehicles, and overall feel of the movie is so accurate. I love how the story will be told from the perspectives of air, land, and sea. I have not even mention the cast, which includes a few Nolan regulars, plus great additions in Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and new young actors. This is one of the movies I have been eagerly looking forward to in 2017.

Girls Trip     GirlsTrip

Studio: Universal
Release Date:
July 21, 2017
Synopsis:
When four lifelong friends travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there’s enough dancing, drinking, brawling, and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This looks like it’s going to be a pretty funny friends’ weekend movie. They have all the typical characters that you see when friends get together in a movie. But, these ladies give it their own little twists and it seems to work. I particularly like Jada Pinkett Smith, and even more so Tiffany Haddish. I have not seen much of the other two ladies, so they could be unknown factors in the movie. We shall wait see if the next trailer shows a little more of them.

Kill Switch     KillSwitch

Studio: FilmNation Entertainment
Release Date:
June 16, 2017
Synopsis:
A pilot battles to save his family and the planet after an experiment for unlimited energy goes wrong.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. This definitely has a direct to DVD movie feel to it. I am sure it is being released because of the Dan Stevens being the “It” guy of the moment. As he has 4 movies released this year so far, including the huge hit “Beauty and the Beast”. I can’t really tell what is going on in the trailer, except for the post-apocalyptic look to it. Perhaps, they are saving all the good stuff for the next trailer.

Rough Night     RoughNightA

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date:
June 16, 2017
Synopsis:
A male stripper ends up dead at a Miami beach house during a bachelorette party weekend.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This definitely reminds me of Very Bad Things, except for the gender switch and the more comedic tone to it, particularly the Weekend at Bernie’s sub-plot. I have mixed emotions about the cast. I like Scarlett, Zoe, and Ilana, but do not care too much for Kate and Jillian. To me it always seems like these two ladies are over-acting and trying too hard. However, there have been a lot of R-rated movies that have been good hits so I’m willing to give this the benefit.

The Big Sick     TheBigSick

Studio: Apatow Productions, FilmNation Entertainment
Release Date:
July 14, 2017
Synopsis:
A couple deals with their cultural differences as their relationship grows.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is definitely one of those small movies that could be a surprise hit. It has a good combination of comedy, romance, emotions, and drama. I was enjoying the romance and drama between the two lovebirds, but then when tragedy struck I began to enjoy it even more. It’s mostly due to the introduction of the girl’s parents played wonderfully by Ray Romano and Holly Hunter. Add the fact that this story is based on a real-life story and romance, then you got my attention.

The Limehouse Golem     TheLimehouseGolem

Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
A series of murders has shaken the community to the point where people believe that only a legendary creature from dark times – the mythical so-called Golem – must be responsible.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I love me a good serial killer thriller and this has the potential to be a good one. It is creepy, suspenseful, dark but not too bloody. The set designs and costumes also add to the historic tone of the movie. I am a fan of Bill Nighy, so it’s going to be enjoyable to watch him do his thing. I am not too sure about his co-star and the supporting cast, which is why my A.F. is not a bit higher. I hope their next trailer alleviates some of my apprehensions.

Wonder Woman     WonderWomanB

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date:
June 2, 2017
Synopsis:
Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained warrior. When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. The more I see of this movie, the less I like it. I am going to see since I am a big comic book movie fan. It is just the acting from Gal Gadot is not that good. She can definitely hold her own action-wise, and she looks great as Wonder Woman. I’m just not sure she will do a great job headlining the movie. She has a good supporting cast, especially Chris Pine as Steve Trevor. The action sequences look great, the SFX look top-notch, the set designs are good, and the costumes for that period are spot on. Just another FOUR more weeks to go!

Woodshock     Woodshock

Studio: A24
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
A woman falls deeper into paranoia after taking a deadly drug.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, it looks creepy and almost dream-like, which adds to the tone of the film. It slightly reminds me of Kirsten Dunst‘s character in Melancholia. On the other hand, the trailer is kind of hard to figure out what’s going on and what exactly the storyline is about. The other unknown factor is the supporting cast, as we don’t see much of them. Let’s hope the next trailer can be a little more enlightening.

For our Mixers with a more eclectic film palette, here’s a smaller movie you might miss out on.  This is something we here at CocktailsandMovies.com we like to call … an extra sip!

Abacus: Small Enough To Jail     AbacusSmallEnoughToJail

Studio: Blue Ice Films
Release Date:
May 19, 2017
Synopsis:
A small financial institution called Abacus becomes the only company criminally indicted in the wake of the United States’ 2008 mortgage crisis.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. These are the kind of hidden “gems” that I enjoy watching. I am a big documentary fan, and even more when you have a subject matter like this that can invoke emotions from you. This is a good look at how the government abuses their power. They use a small and lesser known bank that caters to a specific ethnic community to use as a scapegoat after the home mortgage scandal. It looks great and I know that I will come out of the theatre pissed.
