A Star Is Born

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: October 5, 2018
Synopsis:
A movie star helps a young singer and actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I am not a fan of movie remakes, and this will be the fourth time this movie has been on the big screen. It seems like every time this movie is made it is not as good as the previous version. From what I see hear this movie looks good but it does not compare to the Streisand/Kristofferson version. I like Bradley Cooper, but his singing is not that good. I like Lady Gaga‘s singing but not so much her acting. Hopefully, they will help each other when they are playing to their strengths. This is a decent directorial debut for Cooper. Hopefully, the next trailer will help change my mind about the movie.

Bumblebee

Studio: Paramount
Release Date: December 21, 2018
Synopsis:
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. The first spin-off from the Transformer movies definitely has a different feel to it. This first look is more like the first movie but toned down on all the robots and action. I love how it gets back to the story of a kid who get a car that is more than meets the eye. We get a quick look at the bad guys, Decepticon and U.S. Forces after Bumblebee. But, it looks like this movie will focus more on the friendship between the two. Which is what I really enjoyed about the first movie.

Mortal Engines

Studio: Universal
Release Date: December 14, 2018
Synopsis:
Many years after the “Sixty Minute War,” cities survive a now desolate Earth by moving around on giant wheels attacking and devouring smaller towns to replenish their resources.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I liked the teaser trailer that came out a few months ago so it is good to see a full trailer. The storyline seems interesting, as the two main leads who are unlikely allies. It’s good to see Hugo Weaving back playing a bad guy. I love the steampunk look to the machines, also the world has got a Zion-ish (The Matrix) look to it as well. The SFX and VFX looks great, as do the action sequences. It may not do well though, as I think everyone might be burnt out by the YA dystopian movies.

Night School

Studio: Universal
Release Date: September 28, 2018
Synopsis:
A group of troublemakers are forced to attend night school in hope that they’ll pass the GED exam to finish high school.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. I like this trailer more than the first one, but the movie still has a lot of problems. It seems like a hodge-podge of different school movies. I think Kevin Hart is trying too hard to be funny and Tiffany Haddish is trying to be more serious. Why take your two of biggest comedic stars at that moment and do that? I do like all of the adult students in that place. Most are actors who have had smaller roles so it will be good to see them all work together. Let’s hope the next trailer continues the streak and is better than this one.

Operation Finale

Studio: MGM
Release Date: September 14, 2018
Synopsis:
15 years after World War II, a team of secret agents are brought together to track down Adolf Eichmann, the infamous Nazi architect of the Holocaust.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. This looks amazing. I love movies based on true people and historical events. This is one of the most important manhunts of the 20th century. I love seeing how situations came about and learning about all the things the public was not privy to. I love the choice of Ben Kingsley playing Eichmann, he is such a phenomenal actor. Oscar Isaac has also became a wonderful actor over the last few years. Based on what we see this is going to be one tough emotional & dramatic movie to watch. We have had quite a number of movies with Nazi Germany as the bad guys, but this definitely blows all of those away. I cannot wait to see this.

Peppermint

Studio: STX Entertainment
Release Date: September 7, 2018
Synopsis:
Peppermint is a revenge story centering on a young mother who finds herself with nothing to lose, and is now going to take from her enemies the very life they stole from her.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I love a good revenge flick and this definitely looks like the next great one. I am not a fan of Jennifer Garner as she has been hit and miss with me. But, she looks great in this one. I am not talking about just the action and physicality of her role. But, that first half of the trailer dealing with the grief of losing your family, she does a damn good job. This movie has almost everything you need for a good story. I cannot wait to see her starting crossing out the names on her list and more importantly how she does it. Oh yeah!

Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

Studio: Buena Vista
Release Date: November 21, 2018
Synopsis:
Six years after the events of “Wreck-It Ralph,” Ralph and Vanellope, now friends, discover a wi-fi router in their arcade, leading them into a new adventure.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I really enjoyed the first movie and have been wondering how or if it could be topped. This first trailer has been thinking it is coming really close to it. I love the scene in the first movie when you see the game world for the first time, and this movie has a similar scene when you see the Internet. The movie definitely has the feel and look of the first. I did not care for the overuse of Disney properties shoved down our throats. But the Stormtroopers and more importantly the Disney Princesses scenes were hilarious and so cool. I am going to enjoy taking my nephew and niece to this.

Suspiria

Studio: Amazon Studios
Release Date: November 2, 2018
Synopsis:
A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I am not a big fan of movie remakes that the studios seem to churning out every year. Most of them are not well-done and often just pale imitations of the original. There are things I like about this and things I do not. I like how the story seems to be similar to the original. But I am missing the colorfulness of the original although I do like the vibes the score is giving me. I am not a fan of Dakota Johnson but do love Tilda Swinton. So overall the positives slightly outweigh the negatives. It will be interesting to see if the ending is changed an if so how it will fare with fans of the original. I guess we will have to wait and see.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: February 8, 2019
Synopsis:
It’s been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing a huge new threat: LEGO DUPLO® invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I never got a chance to see the first LEGO movie, but I did see the LEGO Batman movie and loved that. This sequel does not seem as great as the Batman one but it does still look like it will be a lot of fun. I love the character that Chris Pratt is voicing, he had me cracking up with his naivety. I love the LEGO look of the movie, it definitely gives it a unique look to it. Hopefully we get a better look at the villains next time. This looks like it is going to a great movie to enjoy with all the family.

The Old Man & The Gun

Studio: Fox Searchlight
Release Date: September 28, 2018
Synopsis:
Based on the true story of Forrest Tucker and his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I am a big Robert Redford fan since I first saw him as the Sundance Kid. I watch everything he does and he has been doing a lot of diverse roles the last number of years. First of all, I love the vintage look of the movie. This true story seems like it is going to be a lot of fun based on the trailer. It is good to see Sissy Spacek as his love interest, they have good chemistry. But, I think Casey Affleck is going to be great as the police trying to catch him. I love that it has a non-violent aspect to it, and relies on the charm that Redford still possesses to make us root for him. It will be interesting to see how it all ends.

White Boy Rick

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date: September 14, 2018
Synopsis:
The story of teenager Richard Wershe Jr., who became an undercover informant for the FBI during the 1980s and was ultimately arrested for drug-trafficking and sentenced to life in prison.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. As you know I love movies based on true stories, even more so when the movie deals with drugs and the criminal world. This has a story that is hard to believe, that the FBI would use an underage kid like this is plain crazy. There is something that I enjoy about seeing a rise to power and the fall once you reach the top. I am impressed with the young man Richie Merritt playing the lead, he holds his own against this impressive supporting cast that includes the always great Matthew McConaughey. I cannot wait for September to get here already.

Widows

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: November 16, 2018
Synopsis:
Set in contemporary Chicago, amidst a time of turmoil, four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities, take fate into their own hands, and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I was a little apprehensive about this movie. But, after seeing this trailer that is all gone. I have enjoyed seeing all the great movies with women as the leads over the last few years. The “Widows” all look good, especially Viola Davis at their leader. Not only are they trying to stay one step ahead of the law but having to deal with all the male criminals who underestimate them adds another level of drama into the mix. It is good to see Daniel Kaluuya change it up by playing a bad guy. This has just about everything it needs to be an outstanding movie.

Yardie

Studio: StudioCanal
Release Date: TBD
Synopsis:
Adaptation of the 1993 novel ‘Yardie’.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I love movies about drug and the criminal underworld, so this movie definitely peaks my interest. It will be interesting to see it from the Jamaican point of view. The first trailer that debuted a few months ago was not as well edited as this one. This trailer gives us a better look at what the movie is about and it looks like it will be an entertaining one. There is less emphasis on the violence side of things. But, a better look at how things are done and all the drama & problems that can come from it. It will be interesting to see if our hero makes it out alright at the end. This is a solid directorial debut from actor Idris Elba. Hopefully they can lock down a release date soon so we can see the movie.
