Bad Times At The El Royale

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: October 5, 2018
Synopsis:
Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe’s El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption – before everything goes to hell.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I am a fan of Drew Goddard, who has written a lot of movies I have liked over the last 5 years. I cannot believe this is just barely his second movie directing though. I love movies about criminals and also about people who are brought to get together unexpectedly. So when you got both of those together, you know the sh!t is going to hit the fan. I love all the characters and it will be interesting to see what triggers everything and who survives the night!

Dumbo   (Teaser)

Studio: Buena Vista
Release Date: March 29, 2019
Synopsis:
Plot unknown.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I am not usually a fan of teaser trailers, but I liked this one. Disney has really done an extraordinary job of creating live-action movies based on beloved Disney cartoon classics. Although this was quite brief, the SFX for Dumbo were amazing. I love the build-up to seeing Dumbo fly. I love how it is still a down to earth family movie. I love the message and sure it is something that should resonate with young children. I cannot wait to see a full trailer soon.

First Man

Studio: Universal
Release Date:
October 12, 2018
Synopsis:
A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. I love movies about true events/people and add the fact that this is about space exploration and you got my full attention. All The Right Stuff is one of my favorite movies, and this movie is like that but with a mission to land on the moon instead. I do not think this will as great as that but based on this trailer, it goes is going to be pretty damn good. I am a fan of Ryan Gosling and he has been tearing it up the last few years. This movie has a lot of drama and emotion, action, danger, a good cast, and a great story, This is definitely going to have Award Nomination potential to it. I cannot wait for the next trailer.

Halloween

Studio: Universal
Release Date: October 19, 2018
Synopsis:
Laurie Strode comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. Halloween is one of my favorite horror movies as is the character of Michael Myers. The second movie was good but things slowly went downhill after that. So I had mixed signals about this sequel. But, when I found it was a direct sequel to the original and ignored all the previous movies than I got a little excited. After this trailer I am all in! This had everything that made the original a classic. I love all the subtle nods to the original throughout the trailer. I love the Sarah Conner-like transformation that Jamie Lee Curtis character makes. But, it is the moment he dons the mask and that John Carpenter score begins that gave me goosebumps. I wish it was October already!

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Studio: Universal
Release Date: March 1, 2019
Synopsis:
Continues the adventure of Hiccup and his dragon Toothless.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I really liked both the previous How To Train Your Dragon movies. It is always nice to return to a world with characters and creatures to see how things have changed. But, this latest sequel does not have that special “oomph” the first two had. The animation is great and the story seems good but it is lacking an emotional punch. That is not going to stop me from going. I just hope the next trailer shows us some emotion.

Serenity

Studio: Aviron
Release Date: October 19, 2018
Synopsis:
The mysterious past of a fishing boat captain living in the Caribbean comes back to haunt him, ensnaring his life in a new reality that may not be what it all seems.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This movie looks pretty darn good. I am loving the slow burn from a peaceful (Serenity) mood in the trailer to total chaos. I am a big fan of Matthew McConaughey and watch everything he does. He looks great in this one, he has been on a roll with the great roles he has taken in the past few years. I am not a fan of Anne Hathaway though, she is hit and miss for me. It seems like she and Jason Clarke might be trying to set him up though. It will be interesting to see what he decides to do and how everything goes not exactly like they planned.

The Girl In The Spider’s Web

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date: November 9, 2018
Synopsis:
Young computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist find themselves caught in a web of spies, cybercriminals and corrupt government officials.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I enjoyed the original Swedish movies when they hit U.S. theatres. But, I did not enjoy the American remake as much. I had mixed reactions when I heard they were going to continue the series. First the original author died, so this movie is based on a book written by someone else. Second, these new versions of Lisbeth and Mikael do not do anything for me. It does still have the look and feel of the original, including a bit of S&M/Bondage. I hope they are not making Lisbeth more of an action heroine, because that is not her character. I am going to see it but I hope new trailers will get me a little more excited for it.

The Little Stranger

Studio: Focus Features
Release Date: August 31, 2018
Synopsis:
The story of Dr. Faraday, the son of a housemaid, who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. During the long hot summer of 1948, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked. The Hall has been home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries. But it is now in decline and its inhabitants – mother, son and daughter – are haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life. When he takes on his new patient, Faraday has no idea how closely, and how disturbingly, the family’s story is about to become entwined with his own.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. There is something about a horror/supernatural movie that is set in the past/countryside that I find a little more eerie. I love the set-up for the characters and history of the house before we slowly start to learn that there is something amiss in the house. I like that they did not show much just give us enough to whet our appetite. I love the casting of Domhnall Gleeson and Charlotte Rampling, who have churning out good performances the last few years. Let us hope their acting performances are not wasted.

The Nun   (Teaser)

Studio: Warner Bros. / New Line
Release Date: September 7, 2018
Synopsis:
A priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. As you know already, I am not a fan of teaser trailers. I liked the trailer as it gave those of already not familiar with Valak and The Nun’s brief mentions in The Conjuring and Annabelle: Creation a quick history lesson. I love it when a horror/supernatural movie takes place in the past it gives it another level of eeriness. Add the fact that part of the movie takes place underground and the eeriness and suspense goes up another level. It had a nice jump out of the seat scare to get you excited for the full trailer.
