A Simple Favor

Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date: September 14, 2018
Synopsis:
A SIMPLE FAVOR centers around Stephanie, a mommy blogger who seeks to uncover the truth behind her best friend Emily’s sudden disappearance from their small town.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. After the first teaser trailer, which I did not care for. Each subsequent trailer has slowly but surely been winning me over. Based on this latest trailer, it looks like we have the makings of a suspenseful who-dun-it. I love the casting of Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, they both look great in their respective roles. I am anxious looking forward to unraveling the mystery before the movie ends.

Assassination Nation  (Red-Band)

Studio: Neon
Release Date: September 21, 2018
Synopsis:
This is a thousand percent a true story about how the quiet, all-American town of Salem absolutely lost its mind.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is what happens when you mix bullying and social media … you get a town that turns into The Purge. I love the slow build-up of the bad side of social media. Thing get worse and worse until the whole town goes crazy and turns into violent savages. I am not sure this is a true story like they said but it will be interesting to see how people descend into madness and how it gets resolved.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: November 2, 2018
Synopsis:
A chronicle of the years leading up to Queen’s legendary appearance at the Live Aid (1985) concert in 1985.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This is definitely a better trailer than the first trailer that debuted last month. I am a big fan of movie based on real people, particularly actors & musicians. I love seeing how the group was first, the early struggles, the fame, etc.. This movie definitely shows more of the energy and sexuality of Freddy Mercury that the first trailer lacked. I am a big fan of Queen, and it is good to see a lot of the music and performances this movie will have. I know that I will be singing along during the movie. Lol. I cannot wait for November to get here already.

Boy Erased

Studio: Focus Features
Release Date: November 2, 2018
Synopsis:
The son of a baptist preacher is forced to participate in a church-supported gay conversion program.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. There have been a few movies based on this subject matter but this looks like it might be the best of them. Lucas Hedges looks great in this movie, he plays his role with lots of emotional and dramatic ability. He holds his own against his parents played by the always great Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe. This is a great story about being true to yourself and not letting others try to change you. This movie could have some award nomination potential to it.

Cold War

Studio: Amazon Studios
Release Date: December 21, 2018
Synopsis:
A passionate love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, who are fatefully mismatched, set against the background of the Cold War in the 1950s in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This trailer evokes a lot of old school Hollywood nostalgia. Which is definitely a nice fresh breath of air in our times of Superheroes, Sequels, and Remakes. Despite it being in B&W and without any dialogue, you could really get a nice idea of what the storyline will be about. I love the music which is almost like another character in the movie. I am looking forward to hearing what they say in the next trailer.

Colette

Studio: Bleecker Street
Release Date: September 21, 2018
Synopsis:
Colette is pushed by her husband to write novels under his name. Upon their success, she fights to make her talents known, challenging gender norms.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I have been enjoying the increasing of women-led movies over the last years. This is a great movie about a woman fighting for what is hers and being give the well-deserved recognition and fame. Keira Knightley looks great in this role, she has really becoming a more versatile actress in her last few roles. Dominic West is always good at playing bad guys, and he is definitely going to be a good adversary for her. This has the potential to be a nice surprise hit.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date: October 12, 2018
Synopsis:
Unknown

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. The first movie was a surprise hit that did well. This sequel pales in comparison to that. It just seems like the same exact movie with different children. There were a few good scenes with the creatures that gave me a chuckle. But, this movie has definitely got a straight to DVD feel to it.

Hell Fest

Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date: September 28, 2018
Synopsis:
A masked serial killer turns a horror themed amusement park into his own personal playground, terrorizing a group of friends while the rest of the patrons believe that it is all part of the show.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I can already tell that this movie is going to be a guilty pleasure. As a person who has attended a number of these and a love of horror movies, this should be a lot of fun. There have been a number of amusement park horror movies, but the addition of the Halloween Fests should definitely make it a whole lot of fun and scares. I cannot wait to see this.

Mary Queen Of Scots

Studio: Focus Features
Release Date: December 7, 2018
Synopsis:
Mary Stuart’s attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I, Queen of England, finds her condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This movie looks phenomenal. I love movies based on historical events and people. There could be no better choice than Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie for these two roles. They play their respective roles with such energy, grace, and emotion that it could lead to some award nominations. I am loving how their relationship begins before the bitterness begins. This is going to be a great story to watch even though we already know how it ends.

On The Basis Of Sex

Studio: Focus Features
Release Date: December 25, 2018
Synopsis:
The story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her struggles for equal rights and what she had to overcome in order to become a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This is another great example of a woman-led movie that deals with the discrimination that women faced and still face today. Felicity Jones just kills it as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she is the perfect choice to play the role. She has the dramatic and emotional skills but has a feisty spirit as well. It’s good to see some great male actors in supporting roles, particularly Armie Hammer and my favorite attorney from Law & Order Sam Waterson as the bad guy. Looks like we are already an extra Christmas Present this year.

Overlord

Studio: Paramount
Release Date: November 9, 2018
Synopsis:
The story of two American soldiers behind enemy lines on D Day.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is definitely a different take on the Zombie movie. Not only is in a different time period but also associated with the Nazi regime. That one tidbit of information alone makes it a bit more terrifying. I love how it just seems like an ordinary wartime movie until we get to the village and all hell breaks loose. This is going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Patient Zero

Studio: Sony / Screen Gems
Release Date: TBD
Synopsis:
After an unprecedented global pandemic turns the majority of humankind into violent “Infected,” a man gifted with the ability to speak the Infected’s new language leads the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This movie reminds me a lot of the TV show The Strain, which I loved. I love the scientific angle to it before everything goes crazy. The “Infected” are similar to the infected in 28 Days Later and World War Z. There is a lot of good action sequences, especially the one scene that reminds me of the scene in Aliens when they drop from the ceiling. I like the casting of Matt Smith and Stanley Tucci, but not so much the choice of Natalie Dormer or the infected rat scene. Which is the reason why it does not have a higher A.F. rating.

Robin Hood

Studio: Lionsgate / Summit
Release Date: November 21, 2018
Synopsis:
A war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I really like this latest re-imagining of the Robin Hood legend. I had reservations since that Russel Crowe version a few years ago. I love the casting of Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx, they have great chemistry together. The action sequences are pretty damn good, especially all those slo-motion shooting scenes. But, it is the casting of Ben Mendelsohn as the Sheriff of Nottingham that takes it to the next level. I always think that a real good villain makes a movie. This is going to be a great movie to see during Thanksgiving weekend.

The Darkest Minds

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: August 3, 2018
Synopsis:
Imprisoned by an adult world that now fears everyone under 18, a group of teens form a resistance group to fight back and reclaim control of their future.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I like the story, it reminds me of a different take of the comic book superhero mutants. The SFX and the kids superpowers look great. I love the battle between them and the government and their attempts to stay on the run and escape capture. The one thing that I am wary about is how most YA books being adapted to movies have not been doing well. I hope that this movie begins to turn that streak around.

The Grinch

Studio: Universal
Release Date: November 9, 2018
Synopsis:
A grumpy Grinch plots to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is the umpteenth version of the classic Dr. Seuss story. The story is what we all know and remember but I do like that we learn a little more about what made the Grinch the way he is. The animation is good and what we expect from an Universal Animated Movie. I am excited to see what kind of trouble that Max gets into.

Unfriended: Dark Web

Studio: BH Tilt
Release Date: July 20, 2018
Synopsis:
A teen comes into possession of a new laptop and soon discovers that the previous owner is not only watching him, but will also do anything to get it back.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I actually enjoyed the first movie more than I thought I would. They fixed the one thing I did not like, which is the supernatural element. I love this time we are dealing with some unsavory and despicable real people. That fact alone that they are actually people like that makes it more realistic and adds to the suspense and horror. It will be interesting to see how each person meets their demise and how survives and how.

Welcome to Marwen

Studio: Universal
Release Date: December 21, 2018
Synopsis:
A victim of a brutal attack finds a unique and beautiful therapeutic outlet to help him through his recovery process.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. Every time I see a new trailer for this movie, I get more excited to see it. Steve Carell has become more than just a comedic actor, he has becoming a versatile actor with such great dramatic and emotional range. I love the doll-like SFX that the actors have when they are in his “world”. Their is amazing cast of women as the supporting cast that helps Carell’s character cope with the real world. But, it’s the triumph of the human spirit and overcoming tragedy that is the real star of this movie.
