Cocktails and Movies and Trailers, Oh My!

Cocktailsandmovies.com Thursday Trailer Tap
Are you sitting in your cubicle with stacks of TPS reports to go through? Listening to that conference call where everyone is talking at the same time about nothing at all that matters? Stuck at the water cooler hearing how The Equalizer 2 took out Mamma Mia! for the #1 spot this past weekend! Need something to watch with that flask in your desk and that burned microwave popcorn from the break room? Let us share movie trailers with you with this week’s The Thursday Trailer Tap

This week’s article should have been a bit bigger after San Diego Comic-Con last weekend. The absence of Marvel and a few other Movie Studios at the convention limited the amount of trailers that debuted. We are getting a good look at movies coming out later this year and next summer. This week we have six great movie trailer, eight good movie trailers and no possible stinkers! We have TEN trailers we are seeing for the first time and FOUR trailer for movies we have previewed for you in the past.

While El Jefe mixes himself another afternoon cocktail, let’s step up to the bar before he comes back. So open your special drawer, fetch that secret stash of booze you’ve got hidden away and come see what will be in store for us moviegoers in the coming months!

I have FOURTEEN new trailers for you to sample from our Thursday Trailer Tap!

Alita: Battle Angel

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date:
December 21, 2018
Synopsis:
An action-packed story of one young woman’s journey to discover the truth of who she is and her fight to change the world.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. I like it when they debuted the first teaser trailer but now with the first full trailer I am really excited to see this. I am loving the new world/environment they created. The SFX and VFX are top-notch. The fight sequences look like they will be great. But, it is the storyline particularly the transformation of Alita that I really like. I am still not too fond of her eyes, because she is the only one that has those kind of eyes. If you’re paying homage to the magna then she was not the only that had eyes like that. Oh well, it’s still going to be an awesome movie.

Aquaman

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date:
December 21, 2018
Synopsis:
Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and to be a hero to the world.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. We finally get our first look and the long wait was definitely worth it. I enjoyed Batman v. Superman and Justice League but deep-down I know they could have been a lot better. Wonder Woman was pretty damn good but overall I think this film may be just as good or even better. I am loving the underwater footage, it reminds me a bit of an underwater Avatar. The SFX look great especially the animals. I love they give us a bit of an origin story to flashback to but that it continues on from Justice League. I am loving all the new characters, especially Black Manta and Ocean Master. I am so excited to see all the underwater battles and if Aquaman can reclaim his destiny and become King. But, they may save that for the sequel.

Christopher Robin

Studio: Buena Vista
Release Date: August 3, 2018
Synopsis:
A working-class family man, Christopher Robin, encounters his childhood friend Winnie-the-Pooh, who helps him to rediscover the joys of life.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. Every time I see a trailer for this movie, I am transported back to my childhood. I love Winnie The Pooh and all his friends. I love Winnie’s childlike innocence and it made me smile and laugh many times in the trailer. I love the idea of them coming out into the real world to help Christopher Robin. I am going to enjoy whatever message they have about growing up. I am so excited that it will be here in less than two weeks!

Cut Throat City

Studio: Well Go USA
Release Date:
TBA
Synopsis:
A heist movie set in the lower ninth ward in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This reminds me of a combination of 3,000 Miles to Graceland and Hard Rain or The Hurricane Heist. I am loving the young cast that comprises the crew as well as the more season actors that are the supporting cast. The storyline is something we have seen before, but let’s hope they give it add their spin to it. I am just hoping they do not go out a la Dead Presidents.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date:
November 16, 2018
Synopsis:
The second installment of the “Fantastic Beasts” series set in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World featuring the adventures of magizoologist Newt Scamander.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I really enjoyed the first one and the second looks even better. The SFX, the VFX, sets, and costume designs are all phenomenal. Everyone from the first one is back, with the major additions of Johnny Depp (for the entire movie) and Jude Law. Those two amazing talents are going to add a lot to the movie. But, it is the magic, the wizarding, the spells, and all the magic creature that is the real start of this series.

Final Score

Studio: Signature Films
Release Date: TBA
Synopsis:
Some scores will never be settled.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is a movie that seems like it would be made during the 90’s, it has that Sudden Death feel to it. Dave Bautista seems to be churning out movies like this in between Marvel Comic movies. There are some good action sequences, cheesy lines, and mano-a-mano fisticuffs. They have a good bad guy in Ray Stevenson for Bautista to go against and fight in the finale. Let’s hope the next trailer is a little better.

Glass

Studio: Universal
Release Date: January 18, 2019
Synopsis:
Security guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has 24 personalities.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. Unbreakable is my favorite M. Night movie by far. And when it was revealed at the end of Split that it was connected to Unbreakable, I got super-excited. I am loving how they continue looking at Superheroes/Villains by being grounded in reality and with our real-world eyes. That is what makes having David, Kevin, and Elijah in a mental hospital as patients work so well. Any rational person would think they are crazy, and having Sarah Paulson as their doctor is a great choice. I love the slow burn, the villains teaming up and build-up to the battle between good and evil. It should be a good battle, especially since Dunn’s weakness of water looks like is going to a big factor. I can’t wait for 2019 to get here!

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date:
May 31, 2019
Synopsis:
The next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse: an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

Anticipation Factor: VERY HIGH. This is definitely my favorite trailer of the week! I loved the American version of Godzilla they did again in 2014, the other American version was horrendous. Then I really enjoyed the Kong: Skull Island and when they revealed it was going to be part of a new MonsterVerse, I almost lost it. I was not interested in the young lady and the new characters, but then we they showed Godzilla I got excited. They a brief look at Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, I was taken to another level. I loved the Japanese movies when I was kid despite the not very good costumes. But, the SFX nowadays makes all the monsters look amazing. The Visuals and destruction they create are awesome. It’s going to be a lot of fun to see all the fights on the big screen!

Mid90s

Studio: A24
Release Date:
October 19, 2018
Synopsis:
The story of a boy growing up in Los Angeles in the 1990s.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This looks like it might have the potential to be an entertaining and interesting movie about growing up. I am loving the rise of these teenage coming of age stories over the last few years. I am also impressed with the acting prowess of this young new actors, this young man does a good job of being the heart of the movie. I can also relate to this movie as I did grow up in Los Angeles during the 90’s and skateboarded with my friends. So this should be a lot of fun for me.

Peterloo

Studio: Amazon Studios
Release Date:
November 9, 2018
Synopsis:
The story of the 1819 Peterloo Massacre where British forces attacked a peaceful pro-democracy rally in Manchester.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I love movies based on historical events. Considering the times we are currently living it with all the various kinds of protest going on all over the world, this movie might have a more impact on the viewers. There does not seem to be any big stars associated with it. It has a good story and looks like it will rely on that to get people into theatre seats. But, I think it’s the message of not learning from history that we are doomed to repeat it that will appeal to me.

Second Act

Studio: STX Entertainment
Release Date: November 21, 2018
Synopsis:
A big box store worker reinvents her life and her life-story and shows Madison Avenue what street smarts can do.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This has definitely got a Working Girl vibe to it. I am liking the re-imagining of that movie and Jennifer Lopez is a good choice to headline it. She is funny and feisty and provides good moments of emotion and drama. I am loving Leah Remini as her best friend, she is pretty funny. The movie may be a bit predictable but it should be fun to watch.

Shazam!

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date:
April 5, 2019
Synopsis:
A boy is given the ability to become an adult superhero in times of need with a single magic word.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I have definite mixed feelings about this. I like that they decided to go in a more comedic direction for this one since Billy Batson is a kid. But I think they went a bit too far as some scenes have a slapstick feel to it or fall flat in regards to Shazam at least. The other thing that irks me is the casting of Zachary Levi. Not too sure about his as the lead, especially since part of the costume is not all him as it definitely seems padded. I do love the similarities to Big, especially in regards to the superhero training montage. I love the casting of Mark Strong as Dr. Sivana, although he is definitely not strong enough to catch a punch from Shazam. I hope the next trailer begins to change my mind about it, I will definitely still see it as I did see all the other DC Superhero movies and those had their moments but were not as well as done as Marvel movies.

The Padre

Studio: Darius Films
Release Date:
TBA
Synopsis:
It tells the story of the Padre, a small-time con man on the run from his dogged pursuers, U.S. Court Justice Nemes and local police officer Gaspar. When the Padre is caught mid-con, he flees the scene in a stolen car, unaware that a precocious 16-year-old girl, Lena, is stowing away in the back seat. After she blackmails him into letting her join his journey, the duo plan their biggest heist yet – not always aware of the dangers of working with each other and the law closing in on them.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I like the all three of the main leads of this movie. I watch all of Tim Roth‘s movies, and enjoy seeing Nick Nolte and Luis Guzman. The young lady, Valeria Henriquez, is a pleasant surprise. This has a good story and looks like it will have a lot of twist and turns. It will be interesting to see who survives and what happens to everyone.

The Spy Who Dumped Me

Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date:
August 3, 2018
Synopsis:
Audrey and Morgan are best friends who unwittingly become entangled in an international conspiracy when one of the women discovers the boyfriend who dumped her was actually a spy.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I have slowly but surely been won over by the movie trailers for this. I really enjoy the comedies that Milas Kunis have been doing over the last few years. Still not a fan of Kate McKinnon, who I think just tries to hard to be funny. They do have good chemistry together. There is a lot of funny moments for us to enjoy. It looks like we will be seeing a bit more of Justin Theroux, as his presence seems to be getting bigger ever trailer. This could go either way, it could be either hit or miss. I am hoping for the former.
