Armed Response     ArmedResponse

Studio: Saban Films
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
A team of highly trained operatives find themselves trapped inside an isolated military compound after its AI is suddenly shut down. The crew begins to experience strange and horrific phenomena as they attempt to uncover what killed the previous team.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. This trailer reminds me of a non-horrific version of the first Resident Evil movie. This movie has basically the same premise except it seems toned down in the action sequences. It seems that tone down also applies to the cast involved, with the only big name being Wesley Snipes. A lack of screen presence for the antagonist, also help determine the lower A.F. for this.

Atomic Blonde     AtomicBlondeB

Studio: Focus Features
Release Date:
July 28, 2017
Synopsis:
An undercover MI6 agent is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. From the very first trailer to this final trailer, we have been treated to a glimpse of the next possible spy movie franchise. Charlize Theron‘s latest performance will be the next movie action hero. She has been on a roll with these great action roles of late. This movie is chock full of action, and has a lot of Cold War spy elements. But it is really the 80’s soundtrack that I really love about this one.

Borg vs. McEnroe     BorgMcEnroe

Studio: SF Studios Production AB
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
Borg/McEnroe is a film about one of the world’s greatest icons Björn Borg and his biggest rival, the young and talented John McEnroe and their legendary duel during the 1980’s Wimbledon tournament. It’s a story about two men who changed the face of tennis and who became legends and the price they had to pay.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is the first of two bio-pics for this week’s article, and as everyone knows that is one of my favorite kind of movies. I like this trailer more so than the first trailer that debuted weeks ago. We get a better look at what Borg & McEnroe went through during and before their historic match at Wimbledon. Despite knowing the outcome of this match, it still like it will be quite dramatic.

Breathe     Breathe

Studio: Bleecker Street
Release Date:
October 13, 2017
Synopsis:
Based on the true story of Robin, a handsome, brilliant and adventurous man whose life takes a dramatic turn when polio leaves him paralyzed.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. The second of our bio-pics for this week. This movie definitely looks amazing with lots of emotional and dramatic moments. The storyline is touching, beautiful and inspiring. I definitely got goosebumps and a wee bit choked up. Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy‘s performances remind me of the leads from The Theory Of Everything, but I think it might be better.

First Kill     FirstKill

Studio: Aboreturm Productions
Release Date:
July 21, 2017
Synopsis:
A Wall Street broker is forced to evade a police chief investigating a bank robbery as he attempts to recover the stolen money in exchange for his son’s life.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. This movie has a straight to home stream vibe to it. Most people who will see this, me included, will do so because of Bruce Willis. I have seen him in a lot of small movies lately, mostly in supporting roles. This is a storyline that we have seen in the past, with a parent doing whatever it takes to get their child back. It does have some decent action sequences, and the acting is not bad. So there is a bit of potential in this movie being ok.

Granny Of The Dead     GrannyOfTheDead

Studio: TudorFilms Production
Release Date:
July 6, 2017
Synopsis:
Regular guy Ed (Marcus Carroll) awakes one morning to find that his Grandmother has become one of the living dead. While trapped in his home Ed tries to survive the day, keep his house zombie free, stay alive and save the day.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I love those Brits. They have been making some good to great movies the last few years. They have done some good zombie movies as well as some pretty good zombie comedies. This seems like a mesh between Shaun Of The Dead and Cockney vs Zombies. This movie definitely is more funny than it is scary and it has British humor which is often times not well-received. This looks like it is going to be a fun time at the movies, something to sit back, turn off the brain, and enjoy.

Ingrid Goes West     IngridGoesWestA

Studio: Neon
Release Date:
August 11, 2017
Synopsis:
Ingrid Thorburn is an unhinged social media stalker with a history of confusing “likes” for meaningful relationships. Taylor Sloane is an Instagram-famous “influencer” whose perfectly curated, boho-chic lifestyle becomes Ingrid’s latest obsession. When Ingrid moves to LA and manages to insinuate herself into the social media star’s life, their relationship quickly goes from #BFF to #WTF.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This movie looks like it’s going to be funny. I did not like the first trailer much, but this second one has changed my mind about it. I am not much of an Aubrey Plaza fan, but she is perfect for this. She is all kinds of funny but also all kinds of crazy. I like Elizabeth Olsen and she is good as a social media celebrity. They have good chemistry together, and it’s going to be a lot of fun to see how this movie ends.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle     JumanjiWelcomeToTheJungle

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date:
December 20, 2017
Synopsis:
In a brand new Jumanji adventure, four high school kids discover an old video game console and are drawn into the game’s jungle setting, literally becoming the adult avatars they chose. What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji – you must survive it. To beat the game and return to the real world, they’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves – or they’ll be stuck in the game forever.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I enjoyed the first Jumanji immensely, the second one I enjoyed as well, and I was surprised when I heard a third one was in the works. I am usually a bit more excited about a Dwayne Johnson movie but this one not so much. The beginning of the movie reminded me of the Power Rangers movie that came out earlier this year, which is not a good thing. I do like the twist of the players going into the game this time as well as the character reversal. However, with the comedic talent involved I thought it would be more funnier. Maybe the next trailer will help to alleviate my concerns.

Open Water 3: Cage Dive     OpenWater3CageDive

Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
Three friends filming an audition tape for an extreme reality show, take part in shark cage diving, only to be left in great white infested waters, turning their recording into life and death.

Anticipation Factor: LOW. I thought the first Open Water was interesting, and the second one was horrible. This does not look any better than the second one, and reminds me of 47 Meters Down that hit theatres last month. At least they are changing up the life and death situations for each movie. The SFX for the shark does not look very good, and I definitely do not care for the handheld camera aspect of it.

Polaroid     Polaroid

Studio: Weinstein / Dimension
Release Date:
August 25, 2017
Synopsis:
A teenage loner named, Brad, stumbles upon a vintage Polaroid camera that houses a terrible secret: anyone who has their picture taken by it will suffer a violent and tragic death.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. Based on what I have seen, this has the potential to be a nice little horror hit. It reminds me a bit of the Final Destination movies, with people knowing they will die and trying to stop it. Rather than an unseen force causing their death, this evil has a body that’s is coming for this teens. It has a good horror vibe to it, with some scary moments. I have seen a number of bad horror movies lately, so I will be looking forward to this.

The Last Face     TheLastFace

Studio: River Road Entertainment
Release Date:
TBA
Synopsis:
A director of an international aid agency in Africa meets a relief aid doctor amidst a political/social revolution, and together face tough choices surrounding humanitarianism and life through civil unrest.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I like the story of what these inspirational volunteers must endure when they assist people in 3rd world countries. There is a lot of dramatic and emotional moments they they deal with on a daily basis, which is well captured in the trailer. I do think that both Academy Winners, Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem, are underutilized. I am a big fan of the movies Sean Penn directs ever since The Indian Runner, so I will be there when the movie hits the movie theaters.

For our Mixers with a more eclectic film palette, here’s a smaller movie you might miss out on.  This is something we here at CocktailsandMovies.com we like to call … an extra sip!

Midnight Returns: The Story Of Billy Hayes And Turkey     MidnightReturns

Studio:
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
“Midnight Return: The Story of Billy Hayes and Turkey” explores the emotional and political power of film as seen through the lens of the blockbuster hit, “Midnight Express” when Billy Hayes, the real life subject, returns to Turkey thirty years after his daring escape from prison to face the nation still haunted by the film.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I love watching documentaries that go behind-the-scenes of what really happened to a person or event. Even more so, when it is about a movie that I have seen and enjoyed. I find it interesting how this movie was received when it debuted and the problems that arose from it. It is also very interesting to see that Billy Hayes may not have been so innocent before he was caught. This is going to be informative and a lot of fun to watch.

Swim Team     SwimTeam

Studio: Argot Pictures
Release Date:
July 21, 2017
Synopsis:
SWIM TEAM chronicles the overwhelming struggles and extraordinary triumphs of 3 young athletes with autism and shows how a swim team can bring hope to a community.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This is one of the main reasons why I love documentaries. When you get a chance to see an inspiring and moving film that chronicles the life and struggles of these disabled high school athletes. A documentary like this can inspire not just disabled people but anyone to follow their dreams. There is a lot of emotional and dramatic moments that will get viewers choked up. And if you do not, then there may be something wrong with you because even I did.

The Persian Connection     ThePersianConnection

Studio: Black Light District
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
After being wrongly accused of stealing from his former boss, an Iranian gangster with girl problems must hunt down stolen drugs in this neon-noir fever dream set in the bizarre Persian and Russian Los Angeles underworld where obscene reigns supreme.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I love a good crime drama, especially when it explores the criminal underworld. I love getting a chance to see how things are done in different cultures from the ones we already know about American, British, Russian, etc.. It has a good storyline with good action sequences, bloody violence, and suspense. The movie has a vibe that reminds me a bit of Wild At Heart & True Romance. I am excited to see this and to find out how it all ends.

 – C&M –

The Untamed     TheUntamed

Studio: Strand Releasing
Release Date:
July 21, 2017
Synopsis:
A couple in a troubled marriage locate a meteorite, initiating an encounter with a mysterious creature. Their lives are turned upside down by the discovery of the creature, which is a source of both pleasure and destruction.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I am a fan of foreign movies as most of the time this is where we get most original movies nowadays. In this case, this definitely has a wisp of Species but with a foreign flavor to it. Often times, a foreign movie will deal with real-life issues that will captivate the viewer’s attention. The brief look of the monster is a bit campy and B-movie quality, but I think it will be what it does that will be its most important thing.
