Welcome to CocktailsandMovies.com Thursday Trailer Tap!

Cocktailsandmovies.com Thursday Trailer Tap
Are you sitting in your cubicle with stacks of TPS reports to go through? Listening to that conference call where everyone is talking at the same time about nothing at all that matters? Stuck at the water cooler hearing how The Hitman’s Bodyguard repeated as the #1 movie! Need something to watch with that flask in your desk and that burned microwave popcorn from the break room? Let us share movie trailers with you.

The last two weeks of The Thursday Trailer Tap have had slightly below average number of movie trailers for us to review and it seems like we continue that streak. This week we have SIX trailers we are seeing for the first time and TWO new trailers for movies we have previewed in the past. This week we have trailers about a historic tennis championship match, a man deals with life inside of a prison, want to be hitmen try to kill the best hitman in the world, three veterans bring a fallen soldier and son home, the story of Deep Throat and Watergate scandal, our favorite State Troopers are back, a violent criminal get caught up in a conspiracy after saving a young girl, and a young child ask a samurai to avenge her father’s death!

While El Jefe mixes himself another afternoon cocktail, let’s step up to the bar before he comes back. So open your special drawer, fetch that secret stash of booze you’ve got hidden away and come see what will be in store for us moviegoers in the coming months!

I have EIGHT new trailers for you to sample from our Thursday Trailer Tap!

Borg vs. McEnroe

Studio: Curzon Artificial Eye
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
The story of the 1980s tennis rivalry between the placid Björn Borg and the volatile John McEnroe.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I love bio-pics, and I am loving this behind the scenes look at a historic tennis championship. This has a lot of emotion and drama with a candid look at the stress that both tennis champions were under. They have made two great choices in the leads, they both capture the essence of Bjorn and McEnroe. Despite knowing the results of the match, it’s going to be fun watching it unfold.

Brawl In Cell Block 99

Studio: Assemble Media
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
A former boxer-turned-drug runner lands in a prison battleground after a deal gets deadly.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I have been hearing great things about this movie, and I have been anticipating this first look. I am a fan of director S. Craig Zahler’s Bone Tomahawk, so I know what to expect from this movie. Not a conventional choice for a lead, but I think Vince Vaughn is a certified bad-ass. He reminds me of Edward Norton‘s role in American History X. It looks like they are saving up all the violence I have been hearing about for the movie. Which is a good thing, because it might scare away the squeamish.

Killing Gunther

Studio: Saban Films
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
A group of eccentric assassins are fed up with Gunther, the world’s greatest hitman, and decide to kill him, but their plan turns into a series of bungled encounters as Gunther seems to always be one step ahead.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. This movie has a part action spoof and mock documentary feel to it. I am a big fan of actors taking chances with different roles, so I am loving Arnold Schwarzenegger in this role. I give it a medium-low A.F., because he does not have good antagonists to battle against. I do not think the A.F. will go up with additional trailers, but I will still be there opening weekend.

Last Flag Flying

Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date:
November 17, 2017
Synopsis:
Thirty years after they served together in Vietnam, a former Navy Corpsman Larry “Doc” Shepherd re-unites with his old buddies, former Marines Sal Nealon and Reverend Richard Mueller, to bury his son, a young Marine killed in the Iraq War.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I am a big Richard Linklater fan and I see everything he does. He does a great job of crafting interesting characters with a good realistic storyline. He has three great leads in Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne to work with on this one. They do have some great moments and have good chemistry with one another. This movie is going to be dramatic and emotional, but there is quite a bit of comedy to keep it from being too emotional. It looks good enough to have some award nomination potential.

Mark Felt – The Man Who Brought Down The White House

Studio: Sony Classics
Release Date:
September 29, 2017
Synopsis:
The story of Mark Felt, who under the name “Deep Throat” helped journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncover the Watergate scandal in 1974.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. As I mentioned earlier in this article I love bio-pics, especially ones dealing with historical events. I am looking forward to seeing things that the general public was not aware of in regards to the Watergate scandal. Liam Neeson is a great choice for Mark Felt, most people think of him as an action star but forget he is an actor first. He also has a good supporting ensemble cast to work with. It looks like I will not have to wait very long for it to hit theaters.

Super Troopers 2  (Red-band)

Studio: Fox Searchlight
Release Date:
April 20, 2018
Synopsis:
When a border dispute arises between the U.S. and Canada, the Super Troopers are tasked with establishing a Highway Patrol station in the disputed area.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I am a huge fan of the original and have been eagerly awaiting this sequel when I heard they would be making it. This is just a teaser trailer so we don’t get a good look of what the movie is about. But, we can see that it has the same magic as the first. I can not wait to see a full trailer for this.

You Were Never Really Here

Studio: Film4, Why Not Productions
Release Date:
TBD
Synopsis:
A missing teenage girl. A brutal and tormented enforcer on a rescue mission. Corrupt power and vengeance unleash a storm of violence that may lead to his awakening.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. This looks amazing! I can see the hype coming from Cannes was indeed well-deserved. Joaquin Phoenix looks so good, he does a great job of acting but also dishing out the violence. I heard he does some impressive things with that hammer, and I’m definitely excited to see that. I love the look and feel of this movie that Lynne Ramsay has written and directed. I really liked her movie, We Need To Talk About Kevin, so I am looking forward to her latest.

For our Mixers with a more eclectic film palette, here’s a smaller movie you might miss out on.  This is something we here at CocktailsandMovies.com we like to call … an extra sip!

Blade Of The Immortal  (Red-band)

Studio: Magnolia
Release Date:
November 3, 2017
Synopsis:
Manji, a highly skilled samurai, becomes cursed with immortality after a legendary battle. Haunted by the brutal murder of his sister, Manji knows that only fighting evil will regain his soul. He promises to help a young girl named Rin avenge her parents, who were killed by a group of master swordsmen led by ruthless warrior Anotsu. The mission will change Manji in ways he could never imagine.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. Huge Takashi Miike fan here! Once I saw my first movie of his, I have seen everything he has done since. His movies are definitely not for the squeamish, and this definitely looks like it outdoes his 13 Assassins. This movie reminds me slightly of Shogun Assassin but with a western revenge theme to it. I like that this has bits of humor in it, as well as a father/daughter type relationship to it. This might possibly be the best Takashi Miike movie ever!
