Annihilation

Studio: Paramount
Release Date: February 3, 2018
Synopsis:
A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don’t apply.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. I have been enjoying the well-done and intelligent Sci-Fi movies done over the last number of years. I loved Alex Garland‘s directorial debut in Ex Machina, and it appears he has done it again. This movie has a similar feel to Arrival, but also a bit of his Ex Machina as well. He has a great cast led by Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh. I love the SFX, the visuals, and the eerie and mysterious feel to it. I can’t wait to see what a full trailer will reveal to us, hopefully not too much though.

Geostorm

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: October 20, 2017
Synopsis:
When the network of satellites designed to control the global climate start to attack Earth, it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything and everyone.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. I have been a fan of natural disaster type movies since the 1970’s. The SFX and VFX for this look great, technology advances definitely make for some amazing weather situations. I am more use to seeing Gerard Butler in action movies, so it will be interesting to see who he is fighting against exactly. I am worried that the lack of presence of a villain might hinder this movie.

Gotti

Studio: Lionsgate Premiere
Release Date: TBD
Synopsis:
The story of crime boss John Gotti and his son.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-LOW. It is sad to see how far John Travolta has fallen with this latest movie. This looks more like a made for TV movie than a big screen movie. That may have to do a lot with the first time movie director Kevin Connolly, Eric from Entourage. The story does seem interesting enough that chronicles the rise and fall of the famed mobster. But, it is his look that is somewhat bothersome to me. He does not have much supporting cast to work with, so that makes it more difficult to be a good movie. Maybe the next trailer will be a lot better.

Isle Of Dogs

Studio: Fox Searchlight
Release Date: March 23, 2018
Synopsis:
Set in Japan, Isle of Dogs follows a boy’s odyssey in search of his dog.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I am a fan of Wes Anderson‘s movies. This movie reminds me of the animation used on Fantastic Mr. Fox. There are not a lot of fans of either Wes’ movies or his preferred animation style. However, I do believe he is a good storyteller and creates some wonderful & eccentric characters. And in his latest, I think he has crafted a wonderful story about a boy and his dog.

Murder On The Orient Express

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: November 10, 2017
Synopsis:
A lavish train ride unfolds into a stylish & suspenseful mystery. From the novel by Agatha Christie, Murder on the Orient Express tells of thirteen stranded strangers & one man’s race to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I find myself at odds with the A.F. for this one. Despite the All-Star cast that comprises this movie, I know the outcome of the movie. And if they do change the ending of it, then it may ruin the movie. The one saving grace will be Kenneth Branagh. I love both his directing and acting abilities, so it will be great to see that. The All-Star cast will definitely attract a new generation of movie-goers to the Agatha Christie novel.

Peter Rabbit

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date: February 9, 2018
Synopsis:
Feature adaptation of Beatrix Potter’s classic tale of a rebellious rabbit trying to sneak into a farmer’s vegetable garden.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I am enjoying that classic childhood books are being brought to the big screen, but I am not enjoying that they are being updated. This looks like it’s more in line with the movie Furry Vengeance than the book I remember reading as a child. The SFX look great, the animals looks so life-like, and it does look like it will be a lot of fun. I hope that the next trailer shows us more things that are more in line with the book.

Pitch Perfect 3

Studio: Universal
Release Date: December 22, 2017
Synopsis:
Following their win at the world championship, the now separated Bellas reunite for one last singing competition at an overseas USO tour, but face a group who uses both instruments and voices.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is not my kind of movie and I have never seen the previous two movies. This latest movie does have an interesting plot-point that most college graduates can relate to. But, it’s the big fish in the small pond competing with other big fishes that I like. The ladies have good camaraderie and chemistry with one another. There is a lot of things that fans will like and appreciate. It looks like they will go out with a bang.

The Commuter

Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date: January 12, 2018
Synopsis:
A businessman is caught up in a criminal conspiracy during his daily commute home.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. You can not go wrong with watching a Liam Neeson action movie, even more so when you consider it will be on his last few. It will be interesting to see why he would do it or exactly what this criminal conspiracy is. I will be curious to see if his character is someone who could fight or will be using more of his brain to stop these bad guys. I am just hoping that it does not turn into an Unstoppable-like scenario toward the end.

The Killing Of A Sacred Deer

Studio: A24
Release Date: October 20, 2017
Synopsis:
Steven, a charismatic surgeon, is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart, when the behavior of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. I enjoyed Yorgo Lanthimos‘ movie The Lobster that came out last year. This movie has a similar style to that but this one looks even better. I have loved the various trailers I have seen and this one shows more of Barry Keoghan‘s Martin character, who is a nice boy but also not all there. The real star of the movie though is Colin Farrell, his acting has been impressing me lately with the different kind of roles he has taken. Nicole Kidman is a good choice for a wife, she has really been enjoying a Renaissance of her career the last two years. This storyline is going to be dramatic and emotional, and I am looking forward to see what’s going to happen and how it will all end.

The Maze Runner: The Death Cure

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: January 28, 2018
Synopsis:
Young hero, Thomas, embarks on a mission to find a cure to a deadly disease known as the “Flare”.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This is a good teaser trailer for the last movie in The Maze Runner series. I liked the first one but the second one was just okay. I like that it comes full circle and returns to the maze plot. It is a little weird to see how much the kids from the first one have grown up. It will be good to see what lies in store for the final movie when a full trailer hits.
