Aquaman

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: December 21, 2018
Synopsis:
Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and be a hero to the world.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. The latest trailer is the best one yet. There are giving us a better look at Arthur’s history and destiny. The SFX and VFX are amazing, the underwater sequences are very Avatar-like. I see a lot of scenes that remind me of parts of other movies as well. The action sequences look great, and there are other moments that are definitely wow. This has the potential to easily be better than Justice League.

Holmes and Watson

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date: December 25, 2018
Synopsis:
A humorous take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic mysteries featuring Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. This movie is not their best collaboration together but it did have a few moments that were funny. It was more of a spoof on the Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law version of the Holmes & Watson partnership. I hope the next trailer is a lot better, but regardless I am always there when these two get together for a movie.

Mary, Queen Of Scots

Studio: Focus Features
Release Date: December 7, 2018
Synopsis:
Mary Stuart’s attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I, Queen of England, finds her condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution.

Anticipation Factor: VERY HIGH. This latest pushed my A.F. rating to the top. The first trailer was great and it showcased both Queens. But, this one had more emphasis on Queen Mary. It showed more of her story, what drives her, and her leadership abilities. This movie has a nice combination of drama, emotion, and action. I am already a fan of Saoirse Ronan, but this looks easily like her best performance yet.

Mortal Engines

Studio: Universal
Release Date: December 14, 2018
Synopsis:
A mysterious young woman named Hester Shaw joins forces with Anna Fang, a dangerous outlaw with a bounty on her head, and Tom Natsworthy, an outcast from London, to lead a rebellion against a giant predator city on wheels.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I have grown a bit weary of these movies based on YA novels. But, this movie might change my feelings on them. It has an interesting dystopian story with great visuals, SFX, and VFX. I have mixed feelings about the cast. I am not that keen on these two newcomers playing the young lady and man. But, Hugo Weaving is always a great bad guy. Plus, the fact that the great Peter Jackson has a hand in producing this, It has the potential to be entertaining.

Overlord   (Final Trailer)

Studio: Paramount
Release Date: November 9, 2018
Synopsis:
The story of two American soldiers behind enemy lines on D Day.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. Just when you think it could not get worse than being in a World War, you have to deal with the undead. This movie looks like it’s going to be good. It has an interesting storyline and could easily been something the Nazis could have been working on. There is a healthy mix of war, fighting, violence, and horror that the trailers have shown us. This is going to be one crazy ride.

Robin Hood   (Final Trailer)

Studio: Lionsgate / Summit
Release Date: November 21, 2018
Synopsis:
A war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. I am loving the latest iteration of the Robin Hood mythology. This is easily the most action packed version I have ever seen. Even though this is the umpteenth version, what makes it so entertaining is the chemistry between Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx. They remind me a lot of Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, just funnier and cooler. Even though he wasn’t shown much here, Ben Mendelsohn is pretty good as the Sheriff of Nottingham and having a good bad guy can often make or break a movie in my humble opinion.

Rocketman

Studio: Paramount
Release Date: May 31, 2019
Synopsis:
The story of Elton John’s life, from his years as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music through his influential and enduring musical partnership with Bernie Taupin.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. I am not a fan of teaser trailers but this one got me excited about the movie. I am a fan of bio-pics, even more so when they are about musicians. I think Taron Egerton looks great as Elton John. I think it’s the numerous outfits, eyeglasses, and hats that really do a lot of the work. As you can see there were a lot of great scenes filled with fun, emotion, and drama. And it was the Rocketman song that really took the trailer to the next level. I cannot wait to see a full trailer.

The Mule

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: December 14, 2018
Synopsis:
A 90-year-old horticulturist and WWII veteran is caught transporting $3 million worth of cocaine through Michigan for a Mexican drug cartel.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. I am a huge Clint Eastwood fan and love all the movies he does in front of or behind the camera. It has been awhile since he’s done both but when he does it’s almost always pretty damn good. He looks great playing an ordinary everyday man, who has hit tough times and put into a dangerous situation. This movie has a very healthy dose of suspense and danger, but it’s the emotional and dramatic parts of the movie where he really shines. I love the casting of Bradley Cooper and Michael Pena as the FBI agents on his trail. Add the fact that this is based on a true story, and you got my money opening weekend.

The Upside

Studio: STX Entertainment
Release Date: January 11, 2019
Synopsis:
A comedic look at the relationship between a wealthy man with quadriplegia and an unemployed man with a criminal record who’s hired to help him.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I am not a big fan of American remakes of foreign films, as they typically lose something in translation. This remakes goes into a more comedic take on the original movie, but hopefully they just emphasis that for the first trailer. I do like the casting of Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart, they do make an interesting duo. It will be interesting to see if Nicole Kidman’s role is beefed up from the original. This movie definitely has the potential to be a good movie.

Vice

Studio: Annapurna Pictures
Release Date: December 25, 2018
Synopsis:
VICE explores how a bureaucratic Washington insider quietly became the most powerful man in the world as Vice-President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways still felt today.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. I think director Adam McKay is definitely transforming from comedy to drama very well. This follow-up to The Big Short (which I loved) is great. Christian Bale is one hell of an actor, especially when he transform himself into this character. He is almost completely unrecognizable as Cheney. The ensemble cast assembled is great, they are definitely going to add a lot to the story. I think most of know a little bit about the man, but it will be great to see things we were never privy to like the meeting where he was asked to be VP. If the rest of the moment is that good, we could definitely be talking Award nomination potential.
