Cocktails and Movies and Trailers, Oh My! Thursday Trailer Tap
Are you sitting in your cubicle with stacks of TPS reports to go through? Listening to that conference call where everyone is talking at the same time about nothing at all that matters? Stuck at the water cooler hearing about Blade Runner 2049 took the top spot at the box office! Need something to watch with that flask in your desk and that burned microwave popcorn from the break room? Let us share movie trailers with you. Now that the summer season is a distant image in our rear-view mirror, we have gotten a lot more movie trailers to view for this week’s The Thursday Trailer Tap

After the slowest week for movie trailers we have ever had last week, I am glad to say we are back to normal. This week we have FOUR trailers we are seeing for the first time and FIVE new trailers for movies we have previewed in the past. This week we have trailers about an alien invasion & abduction, the Justice League is formed, the real life story of Olympic skier turned Poker Princess for the elite, the Kaiju return, the creation of Wonder Woman, Keanu tries to save the lives of his family by giving them new bodies, Denzel Washington as a lawyer fighting the good fight who begins working for the other side, Star Wars Episode VIII, and two young ladies devise deadly solutions to their trouble!

While El Jefe mixes himself another afternoon cocktail, let’s step up to the bar before he comes back. So open your special drawer, fetch that secret stash of booze you’ve got hidden away and come see what will be in store for us moviegoers in the coming months!

I have NINE new trailers for you to sample from our Thursday Trailer Tap!

Beyond Skyline

Studio: Vertical Entertainment
Release Date: December 15, 2017
A tough-as-nails detective embarks on a relentless pursuit to free his son from a nightmarish alien warship.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I thought the first one took an original and interesting viewpoint of an alien invasion. The sequel looks pretty good and takes the same concept of the first but ups the ante in terms of action & adventure. They got two solid actors in Frank Grillo and Iko Uwais provided all the fireworks. The SFX look better and the aliens look great. I was a bit weary when I heard about the sequel but my concerns have been put to rest.

Justice League

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: November 17, 2017
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. I like that we are getting better looks at the enemy, particularly Steppenwolf. It looks like the Justice League will have their hands full fighting them. The SFX, VFX, costumes, and equipment all look great. I am digging the new look of this movie compared to the darker mood of Batman v. Superman. It’s good that they are not showing Superman and saving that for the movie. The Flash cracks me up, he’s going to be a good character to enjoy. You can definitely see Joss Wedon‘s influences in this trailer over the first one when Zack Snyder had the reins. I am so looking forward to this!

Molly’s Game

Studio: STX Entertainment
Release Date: December 25, 2017
The true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game and became an FBI target.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. Every new trailer is better than the previous. I think this is Jessica Chastain best performance since Zero Dark Thirty. The supporting cast for this is top-notch, particularly Idris Elba. I love that we get to see more of the legal aspect of the movie and the dangerous position that she is in. Aaron Sorkin has not only written another great movie, but it is his directorial debut. I guess this will be another Christmas gift for everyone to enjoy.

Pacific Rim Uprising

Studio: Universal
Release Date: March 23, 2018
Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I really liked the first one but there is something about this movie that feels off to me. The Jaegers and Kaiju look great, as does their fighting scenes. But, their is almost a Power Rangers vibe to it that irritates me. The new cast members for this one I am also not enjoying as much as the first one. I do not care too much for John Boyega as the lead, he does not have the same gravitas as Charlie Hunnam or Idris Elba. Despite that, that will not deter me from watching it. Let’s just hope the next trailers rectify those little problems.

Professor Marston & The Wonder Women

Studio: Annapurna Pictures
Release Date: October 13, 2017
The story of psychologist William Moulton Marston, the polyamorous relationship between his wife and his mistress, the creation of his beloved comic book character Wonder Woman, and the controversy the comic generated.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM-HIGH. This final trailer gives more of the spotlight on the creation and ideas behind Wonder Woman and I like it. I love bio-pics and movies that showcase the origins of characters, literary works, inventions, etc.. I am always interested in seeing how people come up with the idea for things. Which made the beginning of this trailer cool but funny. I like the chemistry between Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall, and Bella Heathcote. That goes a long way in making a movie much more enjoyable.

Studio: Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures
Release Date: TBD
A scientist becomes obsessed with bringing back his family members who died in a traffic accident.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. You put Keanu Reeves in a Sci-fi movie and you can take my money right now. I have seen this storyline done before where a scientist is trying to save a family member’s life. Despite that fact, this still has an interesting twist that you don’t realize that they are replicants before they tell you. I love the science and technology feel to it. But, I was not expecting all the action once they are found out and hunted down. This is going to be a lot of fun.

Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Studio: Sony / Columbia
Release Date: November 3, 2017
Denzel Washington stars as Roman Israel, a driven, idealistic defense attorney who, through a tumultuous series of events, finds himself in a crisis that leads to extreme action.

Anticipation Factor: HIGH. Denzel Washington can do no wrong when it comes to movie roles. He looks amazing in this role. I love the transition of his character from the beginning to the end of this trailer. We are going to be in for heck of a ride as we see this transition and the battle for his soul. I love legal drama and this might be the best one I have seen in awhile. Colin Farrell is great when he is playing a bad guy and it looks like him and Denzel will provide some great moments. This is a great follow-up to Nightcrawler by Dan Gillroy, he has directed and written a superb film.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Studio: Buena Vista
Release Date: December 15, 2017
Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe, and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga.

Anticipation Factor: VERY HIGH. This is by far my favorite movie trailer of the week. I am a HUGE Star Wars, despite that I think this trailer shows that this will be a better film than Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This is definitely a lot more darker much like Episode IV was. We get a good look at things we expect from a Star Wars movies: new planet, new alien species, and new vehicles. But, it’s the presence of Luke Skywalker and what has happened to him that drives the movie for me. I definitely love the moments that we get with our beloved Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. I got all choked up when I saw her. I can’t wait for this movie to get here already!

Thoroughbreds  (Red-band)

Studio: Focus Features
Release Date: March 9, 2018
Two upper-class teenage girls in suburban Connecticut rekindle their unlikely friendship after years of growing apart. Together, they hatch a plan to solve both of their problems-no matter what the cost.

Anticipation Factor: MEDIUM. I was pleasantly surprised with this trailer. I am a fan of Anya Taylor-Joy since The Witch and Olivia Cooke since Me, Earl, & The Dying Girl. So it’s going to be good seeing them paired up, and from this trailer they look good together. It seems they have concocted a nefarious plan to solve their problems. It’s going to be interesting to see them devise, execute, and resolve the inevitable problem that will arise. And it will be good to see Anton Yelchin on the big screen one more time.
