Monday Morning Hangover Report – July 18th, 2016

by Mike Reyes and Tim Barley

While the Pets won the day, Ghostbusters still plays.

Cocktails and Movies Monday Morning Hangover Report 7.18.16

Is it Monday already, Mixers? We could have sworn we were just turning the lights off at the offices and heading out for our first drink on Friday evening only moments ago. That just goes to show that a good weekend, with the right drinks and the right flicks at your side, goes out the door before you know it.

Speaking of which, we’d like to thank our West Coast followers for lifting some spirits as we took in Ghostbusters (2016) this past Sunday. We had a great time at the Arclight Hollywood, with several cocktails going down quickly and easily before enjoying the Cineramadome and some really funny moments during the film. In case you couldn’t make it, or in case you’re still skeptical about whether you should put down some hard earned money on a ticket or two, you can read our review here. Spoiler alert: it’s worth the time. Next up: SUICIDE SQUAD in August. See our Facebook page for details.

With all of that out of the way, let’s take a look at this weekend’s box office rundown!

Monday Morning Hangover Report – July 11th, 2016

Universal goes “Pet” Crazy

hangover report secret life of pets

Good boy, Universal. Good boy! The people at Universal have to be breaking open the Dom this morning and enjoying themselves as they can wipe the stain of Warcraft off themselves. With two moves in the top five, including Secret Life of Pets and Purge: Election Year, they can relax a bit after the bomb from June. In fact, Pets made more than the next 14 movies COMBINED. Obviously, it was a weekend for adults to take the children inside and out of the heat and get a cocktail as the nation really needed a get-away from all the newsworthy events of the past week.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates was the only other new opening last weekend, and it did a respectful $16 million. Not too bad for an R-rated movie! Looking at my picks from Friday last week, I didn’t do too badly. I was a little gun shy with my predictions after the whole Independence Day thing. So, grab a stiff morning cocktails and let’s look at what happened.

A Hologram For The King AHologramForTheKing

Studio: Roadside Attractions
Release Date:
April 22, 2016
Synopsis:
A failed American businessman looks to recoup his losses by traveling to Saudi Arabia and selling his idea to a wealthy monarch.

Anticipation Factor: Medium high. I love the song to open the trailer. I love these fish out of water plots.  This movie has an interesting storyline, although it kind of reminded me of Hank’s Larry Crowne a bit.

Ben-Hur BenHur

Studio: Paramount
Release Date:
August 12, 2016
Synopsis:
A falsely accused Jewish nobleman survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his Roman best friend, who betrayed him.

Anticipation Factor: Medium. Why remake a classic?  This movie does look a lot better than the remake they did a few years ago.  The trailer did pique my interest a bit with the most action pack sequences of the story.  Although, the best parts of the original movie was the dialogue. Let’s see what the next trailer is like.

Central Intelligence CentralIntelligence2

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date:
June 17, 2016
Synopsis:
After he reunites with an old pal through Facebook, a mild-mannered accountant is lured into the world of international espionage.

Anticipation Factor: High. I liked the first trailer that they released.  And this one is not bad as well as we find out more of the history between this two partners. The chemistry between the two is pretty damn good.  Can’t wait to see this one!

Everybody Wants Some!!  (Red-Band Trailer) EverybodyWantsSome

Studio: Paramount
Release Date:
April 1, 2016
Synopsis:
A group of college baseball players navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood.

Anticipation Factor: High. I’ve been eagerly anticipating the first trailer when I heard Richard Linklater was making this. And I’m glad to say he did not disappoint.  This movie has the vibe of his classic Dazed & Confused but set at college in the 80’s.  This looks like it’s going to be a good old time!

Green Room GreenRoom

Studio: A24
Release Date:
April 15, 2016
Synopsis:
After witnessing a murder, a punk rock band is forced into a vicious fight for survival against a group of maniacal skinheads.

Anticipation Factor: Medium high. This second trailer focuses more on Patrick Stewarts’s character and I must say that he can act.  He gives a chilling performance of the main villain that will make you look at him differently from this point on.

Kubo and the Two Strings KuboAndTheTwoStrings

Studio: Focus Features
Release Date:
August 19, 2016 S
ynopsis:
Kubo lives a quiet, normal life in a small shoreside village until a spirit from the past turns his life upside down by re-igniting an age-old vendetta. This causes all sorts of havoc as gods and monsters chase Kubo who, in order to survive, must locate a magical suit of armor once worn by his late father, a legendary Samurai warrior.

Anticipation Factor: High. I love this animated movie, it has a great look and a style unlike I’ve seen.  The animation is top-notch with lots of great scenes.  But, the storyline is what impresses me most.  It’s like we are watching a martial arts movie supernatural movie from the 90’s in animated form.  Can’t wait!

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children MissPeregrinesHomeForPeculiarChildren

Studio: Fox
Release Date:
September 30, 2016
Synopsis:
When Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times, he finds Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. But the mystery and danger deepen as he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers.

Anticipation Factor: High. Now this is the Tim Burton I love! Hopefully this is his return to original movies.  It has a good story, and lots of interesting weird characters.  The SFX on this movie is amazing and all the Visual Effects and Props only add to the kookiness of the movie.

Now You See Me 2 NowYouSeeMe2

Studio: Lionsgate/Summit
Release Date:
June 10, 2016
Synopsis:
One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, The Four Horsemen resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is none other than Walter Mabry, a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the mastermind behind it all.

Anticipation Factor: Medium High. The second trailer reveals a little more about what this movie is about.  It’s good to see that Mark Ruffalo front and center with the group and not behind the scenes manipulating things.  It’s good to see the studio is not showing all the cards with their trailers before the movie releases.

– C&M-

Sausage Party  (Red-Band Trailer)  TheSausageParty

Studio: Sony/Columbia
Release Date:
August 12, 2016
Synopsis:
An animated movie about one sausage’s quest to discover the truth about his existence.

Anticipation Factor: High. This trailer had me rolling from the sweet moment that the foods were happy to be selected to when they realized the reality of their situation.  It’s a funny story with lots of funny moments.  And I love the fact that they made it more for adults than children.

– C&M-

The Legend of Tarzan TheLegendOfTarzan

Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date:
July 1, 2016
Synopsis:
Tarzan, having acclimated to life in London, is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment.

Anticipation Factor: Medium high. This second trailer is better than the first one.  We learned more about the storyline and the history of Tarzan.  The SFX look good, and the action sequences are entertaining enough, but I think a little more evil and menacing from the bad guys.

– C&M-

X-Men: Apocalypse XmenApocalypse

Studio: Fox
Release Date:
May 27, 2016
Synopsis:
With the emergence of the world’s first mutant, Apocalypse, the X-Men must unite to defeat his extinction level plan.

Anticipation Factor: Very High. The next movie in the X-Men series looks to be the best of them all. I have been waiting for years for them to use Apocalypse.  Not only is he their greatest villain, but he is the doorway to bringing a lot more characters into the X-Men Universe. Besides that, the SFX and action sequences look pretty damn good.  I love seeing all the new X-Men characters they are adding in this movie.  This movie will be the end of the New Class trilogy but the beginning of the new X-Men team and future movies.
