Ah, Wednesday… Cocktails, Please
After a little cooling trend here in LA, the heat is moving back into the area. Now, we COULD go to the theater and enjoy the A/C. Don’t worry, we will do that many times here in August. But, what kind of cocktail will be that perfect refresher to go along with a Sausage Party or War Dogs?
Since it IS Wednesday, we’re in the mood to find a new cocktail that fits the bill. We’ve found just the right libation to help us through there rest of the week.
So, without further ado, let’s make some kick ass Mid Week Harrumph Day cocktails and slide toward the weekend…

Raise one with us to a music icon and a movie musical visionary
We’re devastated here in the office with the death of Prince, who gave us one of the greatest movie musicals of all time. And for anyone who grew up in the 1980’s, Purple Rain was a movie that was ingrained across the cultural landscape both on radio and on the big screen. As we set up the office today and pull out our DVD copy of the film, we’re setting up the bar to make drinks.
And we can think of nothing better to salute the man and the legend with the Purple Rain Cocktail.

Man, if feels good to feel good again!
Just before Memorial Day Weekend last Wednesday night, we got hit by a massive, nasty stomach bug that left us like swallowing a spoonful of Drano – “sure it’ll clean you out, but it’ll leave you hollow inside.” But, after much rest and the loss of 10 lbs, we are back in full form but need to rebuild the immune system. So we searched for a classic, easy to make cocktails with lots of vitamin C. Today’s cocktail is the Madras.
We also call it the “HarrumphDay Cocktail.”

On the 12th day of Christmas, we took turns on 12 different couches as our heads were drumming…
We arrived at Christmas Day! A LOT of cocktails have been imbibed, but we saved a classic mixture for the day of days. This cocktail will allow you to relax and disregard the craziness of unwrapped presents strewn around the Christmas tree and the snow outside piling up and the fact that you may or may not have power yet from last weekend’s ice storm. But, if the 12th day of Christmas is “12 Drummers Drumming,” how do we get Santa’s Couch cocktail? Now, follow along with us here:
Santa has had a tough 24 hours. So, after his long DAY, he goes to a Motley Crue concert and meets Tommy Lee. Tommy Lee is a drummer. Drummers love whiskey. Whiskey is the great equalizer and eggnog is just a great Yule time tradition, so mix these two together with some vodka (yes!) and a cinnamon liqueur, and you’ve got yourself a great cocktail to sip on all day long. No wonder it’s called “Santa’s Couch…”
12 Santa’s Couches
- 1 oz. Jack Daniels
- 1 oz. Lemon Vodka
- 1/4 oz. Cinnamon Liqueur
- 3 oz. Eggnog
- Pour all the ingredients into a glass.
Trust me, this will take the edge off the mass hysteria of kids opening presents, squealing with delight and then opening EVERY present and make a big disaster zone of the living room around the Christmas tree and relax you into a state where you won’t mind cleaning it all up later on… So, make yourself a cocktail, enjoy this Christmas Day!
Have a great day, and find us on Facebook and Twitter and share us with a friend.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE!

On the 8th day of Christmas, eight maids a milking brought me a Holiday Bloody Mary…
Only four more after this! We’re already at cocktail #8! And while senior writer Mike is again caught up in some holiday stuff so I found a great cocktail that you can make for those lazy days with a nice breakfast and a movie while snuggled in on your couch. Following our “12 Days of Christmas Cocktails,” which we’ve presented so far, Seven Swans a Swimming Cocktail, Six White Russian Egg Creams, Fiii-ive Irish Golds, Four BlackBirds, Three French Martinis, Two Turtle Dove Cocktails and a Cranberry-Pear Bellini, we stick to my favorite libation, vodka once again!
I’m not a big fan of Bloody Mary’s. If I’m going to drink at breakfast, I’ll go straight for beer (or bloody beer), or just hit the hard stuff and coast the rest of the day. But, this one looks very good, if I don’t say so myself! It’s strong and might be that special cocktail needed to wake up from Saturday’s festivities. It comes from Shape Magazine and their “fit foodies” section. Enjoy, my friends, as we approach the second to last weekend of the year 2013. I give you the Eight Bloody Mary Maids-a-Milking:
8 Maids-aMilking Bloody Mary
- 1 oz Russian Standard Vodka
- 1/2 oz Lucid Absinthe
- 1/2 oz cucumber water
- Splash lemon juice
- 1/2 oz simple syrup
- 2 muddled cherry tomatoes
- Black pepper and sea salt rim (optional)
- Muddle tomatoes in bottom of a shaker. Combine all ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into a chilled coupe glass rimmed with black pepper and sea salt.
- Cucumber water – Peel cucumber and leave soaking in water for 2-4 days. Strain particles out with a cheesecloth and retain the liquid.
- Simple syrup – Combine 1 teaspoon (packet) of Splenda with luke warm water. Stir until dissolved.
This is a great idea for those lazy Sundays or because we were hammered with an ice storm last night (and now snow today), a great cocktail to stay in and sip with your breakfast and watch movies!
Enjoy this cocktail and remember: never watch bad movies unless you have a great cocktail. And don’t drink and drive.
