April’s almost over, and the big guns are coming out to play.

No, it’s not time for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 just yet, (Cocktails and Movies’s first May event is just two short weeks away at the TCL Chinese Theater), but April is looking to help rev the box office up a little more before going full throttle at the beginning of Marvel-ous May. Still, this week’s picks aren’t anything to sneeze at, as everything from lovely baby animals to bitchy throwdowns with or without firearms are on the menu. But even with five new releases, who’s going to even come close to outrunning Dominic Toretto and his family?

Well, that’s what we’re about to find out, as we run down this weekend’s runners and riders!

There’s only one big movie opening this weekend, but boy is it a biggie! The gang all returns, with all their cars and a new villianness. And a submarine! Fate should just about take ALL the money this weekend, but who will take the next nine spots?

Let’s see what’s new this week.

Bank robbers, Smurfs and The Case For Christ

It has all the feelings of another weekend win for Boss Baby, but one movie might surprise a few people. No, I’m not talking about another Smurfs movie. Really? Do we need this movie? Smurfs had their day in the sun and that was in the 1980’s. Granted, some “retro” things can become fun again (yes, we ARE looking at Baywatch), but Smurfs wasn’t all that good to begin with. But, with studios unwilling to take a chance on new talent and unknown prospects, we get this shite.

Which leaves two other movies opening this weekend, as a bunch of old geriatrics rob a bank and a news reporter has his atheistic leanings come up agains his wife’s newfound faith. Don’t get me wrong, there is an audience for both and I’m (Tim) picking one of these to surprise everyone…

Let’s see what’s new this week.

Well, it’s that time again. The weekend. And new movies to see. And old cocktails to drink. So, it’s going to be a cocktails and movies weekend. Here in LA, we’re setting out to see Ghost in the Shell on Sunday. Elsewhere, the world is going to go see Boss Baby. OR, you’re going to go see Beauty and the Beast, again.

So, we ask you, “Whaddya Got on Tap?”

We’ve got robots, we’ve got cops, and we’ve got aliens. The only thing we don’t have is enough time to see them all!

This is the sort of conundrum that vexes us here at Cocktails and Movies, Mixers. There are three films this weekend, and between restocking the bar, renting out the office for March Madness parties, and getting paperwork together for both tax season AND future C&M gatherings, we’re probably only going to be able to see one or two of this weekend’s offerings. We’re sure you feel our pain, as you’re probably only going to dare to see one of these three “OK” looking films. Well folks, let us help you decide, as we go over what Hollywood has on tap for us this weekend, and where we’ll be spending our money.
